Learning areas

As an intern in the Special Topics Unit (STU) within the Statistics Department (STATISTICS), you will be exposed to a whole range of areas such as international statistical standards, including standards on International Labour Migration Statistics, global data compilation and development and maintenance of an international statistical database, the main sources of labour migration statistics including household surveys, population censuses and administrative data sources, as well as general and specific national statistical practices, etc.

You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in the following tasks :

-Support the ILO’s annual data compilation cycle on International Labour Migration Statistics (ILMS) including through preparation of materials, processing and uploading of data submissions from countries into the ILOSTAT database, running manual and automated data consistency checks, supporting data quality assurance procedures.

-Review selected household survey questionnaires and edit STATA processing syntax to generate relevant variables on international migrant status for inclusion in survey datasets.

-Conduct desk reviews and support activities to fill in specific data gaps.

-Review selected literature and country practices on priority topics related to statistics on international labour migration, such as measurement of return international migrant workers, emigrant workers or use of work permit data for statistical purposes, etc.

-Prepare inputs including summaries of literature and country practices, summary tables and graphs, etc for reports, practical data collection materials, communication materials.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile

The ILO Department of Statistics (STATISTICS) is responsible for compiling and making available, in a timely manner, statistics on a wide range of topics related to the world of work. It supports the development of international statistical standards in the field of labour through the International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS) and promotes coordination in statistical activities at the global level through participation in expert groups, technical meetings and other international statistical fora. As a priority, it provides ILO constituents with technical assistance to improve their ability to produce official national statistics on labour related topics through censuses, surveys and administrative records, in accordance with agreed international statistical standards and classifications.

The Special Topics Unit (STU) within the Statistics Department (STATISTICS) conducts statistical work on priority topics highlighted by the Office as requiring special attention, with a particular focus in the area of international labour migration.


Statistics, Demography, Economics, Sociology or related fields with applied statistics coursework.

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago (mandatory).


e.g. any relevant work experience and knowledge of IT would be an advantage.


e.g. working (both oral and written) knowledge of at least one of the ILO’s official languages (English, French, Spanish).


Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and be able to work in a team. Good organisational and time management skills.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.


As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.


Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
