Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on

Job Description

Are you passionate about mechanics and eager to contribute to scientific breakthroughs? Join the ATLAS Detector Operation Group at CERN and be part of the team who is operating and upgrading ATLAS to unlock new frontiers in particle physics.

As a Mechanical Technician, you will play a crucial role in the upcoming upgrade project, where significant installations on the detector systems lie ahead. Your mechanical expertise and strong team spirit will be essential in overcoming the exciting challenges this phase presents.

In your role as a mechanical technician within the ATLAS Detector Operation (ADO) group of the Experimental Physics (EP) department, your responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging in the yearly opening and closing of the ATLAS sub-detectors
    • Installation of new sub-detectors involving specialised mechanical tooling and precise positioning
    • Installation of specific access platforms and standard scaffolding towers in various configurations
    • Participate to sub-detector movements which require high positioning accuracy and operating of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, as well as electromechanical equipment
    • Redact non-conformance forms
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts
    • Read mechanical blueprints and identify manufacturing methods
    • Propose relevant improvement to manufacturing methods
    • Operate conventional machining (turning, milling, drilling)
    • Assemble different product parts according to instructions and adjust them to ensure optimal functionality
    • Inspect parts and finished products to ensure they comply with technical specifications and quality standards
    • Application of mechanical measurement techniques and conventional dimensional metrology
