These positions are located within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) with duty station in Kabul. The Fire Safety Assistants, at the GL-3 level will report to the Fire Safety Officer through the Fire Safety Assistant, on all issues related to fire safety services and operations within the UNAMA compound in Kabul.
Within delegated authority, the Fire Safety Assistants at the GL3 level, will carry out the following duties: • Routinely patrols the field mission compounds and offices to identify fire and safety hazards and ensure that alarm systems are in working condition. • Assists in inspecting and testing fire-fighting equipment, hydrant systems, hose reels and foam inlets and portable fire extinguishers. • Ensures that all fire-fighting equipment are in their locations and precautionary signs and notices are in place and not removed. •Ensures that used fire extinguishers are recharged, all fire/exit doors are not locked or obstructed, making regular inspection of all emergency exit doors, routes, walkways, and other passageways safe and free of obstruction at all times. • Assists in the scheduling, preparation, and implementation of training drills. • Participates in responding immediately to fires, rescue operations, or other emergencies including undertaking evacuation of persons and property. • Assists in investigating fire hazards as required for further reporting as necessary. • Responds to fire incidents / accidents, fight fire and bring the fire incident/accident to successful conclusion. • Ensures the operational functionality of all electronic and manual fire-fighting apparatus mounted in the fire tender. • Conducts basic fire prevention and suppression training for unit’s personnel as part of the Fire Safety Plan; Coordinates training in the field of fire safety; Advises colleagues. • Maintains accurate records on all above and monitors compliance with the Fire Safety Plan as well as with HC regulations. •Performs any other fire-safety related functions as may be directed by the Fire Safety Officer and or the Fire Safety Assistant.

Work Experience
As per the approved special measure for UNAMA, a minimum of two (2) years relevant experience in security related work including military, police, security, or fire-fighting duties combined with experience in UN security operation or on-the-job training or experience in (i) Personal Protection, (ii) Firefighting; (iii) and Defensive Driving is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to zero (0) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher in military, police or fire services. A minimum of two (02) years progressively responsible experience of working in the fire safety unit or similar units within an international organization is required. Prior experience of working in the any unit with functions related to fire services within any Afghan local entity is desirable. Knowledge of security rules, regulations, and procedures of UN including fire safety and first aid procedures, as well as standard security and safety procedures is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in oral and written Pashto or Dari languages is desirable.
