Job Description

Your responsibilities

Are you a passionate Software Engineer? Are you ready to join a team where you will be given an opportunity to make a difference? Take an active role in the design and development of the controls systems used to model, manage, control, and analyze the behaviour of the particle accelerators. Join CERN’s Controls Configuration, Settings and Automation team and realize your potential. Take part!

You will join:

  • The Beams department, responsible for the beam generation, acceleration, diagnostics, controls and performance optimization for the LHC and its injector accelerators.
  • The Controls Software and Services group, which provides solutions for the control and monitoring of all of the CERN particle accelerators, their transfer lines, associated experimental areas and various supporting technical infrastructure services.
  • The Configuration, Settings and Automation section, facilitating data management for logical and physical configuration of the controls systems, empowering accelerator operations with mission-critical settings management, and enabling automation of accelerator controls with various high-level software solutions.

In this position, you will take a leading role in the design and re-engineering of a high-level software application which is a part of a mission-critical system used to monitor the CERN Accelerator Control System.

Specifically, you will:

  • Review the existing solution, analyze and design a replacement solution;
  • Participate in the whole software development lifecycle (requirements, design, development, testing), following a modern agile approach;
  • Interact with the end-users of the services to understand their needs and help translate these into appropriate software solutions;
  • Collaborate with other software engineers daily to deliver quality results.

Our technology stack foreseen for this project includes:

  • Java (Spring and Spring Boot eco-system, Spring Cloud);
  • ReST based APIs;
  • Front-end stack based on Angular;
  • DevOPs and CI/CD with Gitlab, Ansible, Gradle and containerization.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge:

Required skills and experience:

  • Experience in Java development using Spring;
  • Knowledge of front-end development (Angular and XHTML, CSS, web technologies);
  • Experience applying software quality assurance techniques and practice with corresponding tools (Sonar, quality gates).

Advantageous skills and experience:

  • Experience working with Spring Boot, JPA;
  • Experience in designing and evolving client-oriented APIs, ideally based on ReST;
  • Experience working with CI/CD solutions to build, test and provision software to operations;
  • Experience of leading and delivering software products, from the analysis stage to development;
  • Ability to work with relational databases (SQL).

Language skills:

  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background as a Full-stack Java Engineer (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
