Contract Duration:  6 months

Contract Duration

 

Interns are required to work full time for a period between three and six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement). Internship placements shall usually not be extended beyond six months.

 

The Opportunity

 

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individual charges with the gravest crimes of concerns to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression. The Court is participating in the global fight to end impunity, and through international criminal justice, the Court aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent the crimes from happening again. Organisational Context

 

Under the supervision of the Head, Protocol, Events and Visits Unit (PIOS, Registry), the incumbent will be able to participate in the daily activities of the work of the Unit with a special focus on the preparation and organisation of daily group visits to the International Criminal Court as well as the receiving of the general public attending the hearings of the Court.

The incumbent will also have the opportunity to assist with the preparation and organisation of (high level) visits to the Court, ad hoc meetings and special events such as ceremonies at the Court, and assist with the calendar of conferences and meetings. She/he will assist in maintaining the documentation distribution system, as well as deal with incoming correspondence.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

More specific duties are assisting with the daily tasks of the Unit such as:

  • Provide support with queries and requests from visitors at the information desk of the public area.
  • Assist on the organisation of general information visits to the ICC.
  • Welcome groups upon arrival by providing the first introductory presentation.
  • In case of special events, conferences or ceremonies, assist the Unit in the preparations and organization; assist in making logistical arrangements including booking conference rooms, requesting IT services, catering, transportation, parking, preparation and distribution of relevant information materials.
  • Support with administrative tasks such as informing Security of scheduled visits and names of visitors.
  • Welcome visitors in the public area of the Court and, in the occasion of ceremonies, escort them to their seat in accordance with the rules of protocol.
  • Maintain records of visits and events and maintain statistics to serve as indicators to measure the impact of these activities.
  • Prepare and distribute ICC documentation, assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of stock available and anticipate needs for printing.
  • Assist in the creation and compilation of content for the general information visits.
  • Assist with other duties as required.

 

Required Qualifications

 

Education:

All Candidates must have a degree or be in the final stages of their studies at a recognised university. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance.

 

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Unit may be considered an asset.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments.
  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Good communication skills including confidence in public speaking.
  • Has acquired a good standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications).

 

Knowledge of Languages:

Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish), or of Dutch or German languages is an asset.

Remuneration

 

Please note that internship and visiting professional placements at the ICC are unfunded. The ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with any remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for expenses incurred prior, during or after the internship or visiting professional placement.

 

Applicants must therefore be able to support themselves for the entire duration of their internship or visiting professional placement.

 

Limited funding may, however, be available through the ICC’s Trust Fund for the Development of Interns and Visiting Professionals, which receives donations from States Parties and other donors.

 

If funding is available, the Human Resources Section will advertise a funded vacancy announcement in accordance with the terms of reference of the Trust Fund as agreed by the donors.

 

In order to be eligible for a funded placement, if advertised, the applicant must, among other criteria, be a national from a country that is a State Party to the Rome Statue and appears on the United Nations Statistics Division’s list of developing regions.
