Duties and Responsibilities
The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all
human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those
responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.
Daily responsibilities of National Institutions and Regional Mechanisms human rights intern
will depend on the individual’s background and as set out in the High Commissioner’s priority
work aims and objectives, duties may include but are not limited to assist in facilitating the
mainstreaming of the work on National Human Rights Institutions and, in particular, the
intern may: support functions related to the Global Alliance of National Human Rights
(GANHRI) and its Sub-Committee on Accreditation web-page; assist in research regarding
National Human Rights Institutions functions and practices; support the organization and
implementation of seminars, workshops and/or training activities on National Human Rights
Institutions at the national, regional or global levels, as directed; assist in the preparation of
training and information materials concerning National Human Rights Institutions. In
addition to the specific responsibilities outlined above, the intern shall support a variety of
initiatives aimed at further strengthening the relationship between OHCHR, National Human
Rights Institutions and Regional Mechanisms; provide assistance throughout the sessions of
the Human Rights Council (HRC) and its mechanisms and mandates (i.e. Universal Periodic
Review); assist in implementing the Section’s work plan throughout the internship; and
perform other tasks as directed by the Chief of Section or supervisor, as appropriate
Qualifications/special skills
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations
during your internship.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this
internship fluency in English or French is required, knowledge of the other is an asset.
Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. Arabic,
Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
