  • Compete Caribbean is a private sector development program that provides technical assistance to support productive development policies, business climate reforms, clustering initiatives, technology extension services and innovation in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). The program, jointly funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office of the United Kingdom (FCDO), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Government of Canada, supports projects in 13 Caribbean countries.
  • The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) is a not-for-profit association which serves and represents Guyana’s tourism and hospitality sector. Our members include accommodation providers, restaurants and bars, tour operators, destination management companies, domestic and international air service providers, activities and attractions, publishers, jewelers, insurance agencies, commercial banks, tour guides, suppliers of goods and services, and tourism students.
  • THAG’s Mandate and Mission is to promote and grow a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive tourism industry that expands tourism and economic development, by fostering professionalism throughout the industry, ensuring quality service and providing benefits to our members; while collaborating with relevant government institutions and networking with other related local, regional and international agencies, utilizing available resources.
  • To uphold and enhance THAG’s position as the unified advocate championing policies, regulations, and essential support for the development of Guyana’s tourism and hospitality industry, the secretariat requires support in formulating a business-oriented justification for every agenda item on the Association’s advocacy calendar.
  • To fortify and broaden THAG’s involvement in delivering and facilitating training and skill development opportunities customized to the requirements of the tourism and hospitality sector, funding proposals are sought for resources dedicated to capacity building.

About this position:

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Advocacy Consultant. As an advocacy Consultant you will:

  • The consultant will develop a rationale for each item on THAG’s advocacy agenda in a business-case style.
  • The consultant will aid in crafting two comprehensive proposals for IDB funding that align with THAG’s strategic goals.
  • While performing the tasks mentioned above, the consultant will also enhance the capacity of THAG’s secretariat staff, enabling them to sustain effective advocacy and proposal development beyond the consultancy period.

What you’ll do:

The consultant should perform all the activities needed to achieve the objectives, including but not restricted to:

  • Assess and determine needs of stakeholders in private sector and select the most appropriate interventions for support.
  • Review THAG’s advocacy agenda and engage with relevant stakeholders to understand the nuances of each item.
  • Formulate business-oriented justifications for each advocacy agenda item, emphasizing the impact on the tourism and hospitality sector’s growth and development.
  • Collaborate closely with THAG leadership to develop two comprehensive funding proposals for submission to the IDB, emphasizing the potential impact on tourism and economic development in Guyana.
  • Conduct knowledge transfer sessions with THAG’s secretariat staff on best practices in advocacy and proposal development to enhance their skills in sustaining effective advocacy efforts and proposal writing beyond the consultancy period.
  • Establish a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess the impact of advocacy efforts and funding proposals.
  • Develop key performance indicators to track progress and success.
  • Assisted in revenue generation by preparing proposals to co-funders and donors.
  • Formulated project strategies and budgets; and guided work for staff as necessary to ensure that each project meets its objectives

What you’ll need:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in Marketing, Business Development, Business Administration, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
  • Experience: At least 3 years of progressive experience in strategic planning with BSO’s, grant writing and proposal writing, marketing, business development activities or any relevant experience
  • Languages: Proficiency in English.

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Guyana or a citizen of one of our 48-member countries with residency or legal permit to work in Guyana.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
