Mission and objectives

WHO Country Office Kuwait inaugurated in June 2021 is mandated to support the Ministry of Health and other national institutions in meeting the targets of the Sustainable Development Goal 3 aiming to improve health and well-being for all at all ages. The CO is engaged in supporting country partners with technical assistance in specialized health topics in accordance with country support plans developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Additional areas of support include the implementation of capacity-building initiatives, multisectoral action plans, and the establishment of platforms to meet advocacy goals and forge dialogue around health issues of national priority with consideration to the UN guiding principles of inclusivity, equity, gender equality, respect, and dignity for all.

Context

This UNV assignment will support the team in shaping the image of the Country Office in Kuwait through the development and implementation of communication activities, in line with the WHO global communication strategy; identification of subjects of interest to develop communication activities and products; highlighting of achievements and results of WHO partnership with entities with a stake in health and; assurance of accurate and timely production and dissemination of high-quality public information products.

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of WHO Country Office Representative or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Communication Specialist will: • Participate in the production, as relevant, high-quality media tools, including audio-visual, photographic and printed materials, television and radio programmes interviews, multimedia presentations, social media, videos and press releases, etc., to highlight WHO’s visibility, achievements and success stories. • Work with relevant counterparts within the health cluster, regional and field offices, other WHO departments, UN agencies, and other partners to identify communication opportunities , prepare and implement communication initiatives on specific topics. • Work closely with the other country and regional/HQ Communication Officers, if any, in identifying with the press/media to disseminate information on topics of SDG 3 relevance and priority. Support the planning of interviews and filming opportunities to support high-visibility of WHO achievements through television, radio and newspapers, etc. • Participate in the development of communication products to be used by the Country Office to advocate for support from Donors and other Stakeholders. to respond to country office needs. • Monitor social/media coverages and prepare regular reports on social/media activities and trends. • Create and manage content for social media platforms, ensuring consistency with brand messaging and objectives. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Public Health to ensure alignment of messaging and objectives • Organize and execute media events, press conferences, and Advocacy campaigns • Build and maintain relationships with media contacts, influencers, and key stakeholders • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Requirements

Required experience

3 years of experience in in communication, graphic design, visual language, or social media; experience with science communication is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Excellent graphic design and content creation skills, and proven track record in delivering content campaigns; • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Desirable: valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4×4 over rough terrain; (if not applicable, delete) • Sound security awareness; • Have affinity with or interest in advocacy for health, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
