Reporting directly to the COO, the new CTO will provide vision, leadership, and drive innovation across Save the Children’s technology, data, digital tools, infrastructure, and operations portfolio which facilitates its work for children both domestically and internationally. A highly collaborative leader, the CTO will oversee a 60+ person multi-disciplinary team of technologists and functional professionals, including user experience, solution architecture, data analytics and business intelligence, information security, dev ops and support. Along with responsibility for an IT budget of $20-25MM annually enabling an organizational transformation through the organization’s information technology infrastructure, systems and processes, leveraging and evolving technology to enhance operations, expand reach and maximize impact.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

Strategic Leadership

The ideal leader is highly strategic, with proven ability to execute complex technology and transformation initiatives within time and budget parameters. The CTO will think proactively about the future capabilities of the organization while ensuring present-day operational discipline and effective delivery of essential day-to-day support of business divisions. Driven by impact, agility, and greater efficiency, the CTO will build relationships and partnerships globally to create an effective technology strategy for the organization’s U.S. operations while serving as a partner and advisor on a global level. The CTO will assess, nurture, mature, and evolve Save the Children’s business capabilities through technology and data optimization. They will work closely with the COO to develop a vision for the future state of technology and data infrastructure with a multi-year implementation roadmap, highly focused on major strategic choices, and a clear sequencing rationale. They will strengthen the partnership with Save the Children International and the global movement. This vision will include a plan to reduce technical debt and to accelerate the work for an effective global enterprise architecture. The CTO will assess current talent, team structure, capability, and skills; ensure that skills are matched with roles and responsibilities; stabilize the division, drive engagement with clear communication and a strong leadership vision. The CTO will keep Save the Children safe and supported. They will assess and establish a vision and approach to keep information and data safe and protected from cyber threats and maintain compliance with changing privacy laws.

Key Accountabilities

  • Serve as a catalytic and results-driven leader to implement innovative new technology throughout Save the Children US in support of a broader organizational transformation agenda.
  • Drive clear and measurable progress in meeting organizational needs for break/fix issues and minor technology enhancements.
  • Develop clear parameters and guidance, based on lessons learned and industry standards, for an optimal balance between run and grow activities and for ROI criteria in technology initiatives.
  • Serve as the lead technology advisor to the COO and advance the SCUS strategy and the COO agenda.
  • Partner with the COO and senior business leaders, enabling them to deliver on Save the Children’s impact priorities.
  • Contribute, as member, to the U.S. senior leadership team, advising on technology and data related matters.
  • Ensure the organization has systems and processes that follow the General Data Protection Regulation and similar statutes worldwide and work in close partnership with the Legal and Risk Management Division to remain compliant with changing US data privacy laws.
  • Work with the US Programs and the International Programs divisions on innovative ways technology can improve the delivery of the organization’s services and products for children.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, driving transformative change throughout the agency.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage emerging technologies (e.g., cloud computing, AI, automation) to drive innovation, streamline operations and improve service delivery.
  • Champion the adoption of digital tools and platforms to improve collaboration, communication and knowledge sharing among staff, volunteers and stakeholders.
  • Thoughtfully and diplomatically represent Save the Children US as a partner and thought leader in collaborative technical systems leadership initiatives across the Save the Children movement to align and enhance technology, data and information security systems and approaches.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and maintenance of the organization’s information systems, ensuring their reliability, security and scalability, with immediate focus on a CRM and ERP transition.
  • Lead, motivate and develop a talented and diverse group of professionals in the IT team and drive a culture of accountability. Partner with the global IT team and serve as a member of the global technology community.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive IT Infrastructure to Enterprise Architecture strategy, including networks, servers, storage, and cybersecurity.
  • Evaluate and select technology vendors and manage effectively vendor relationships to ensure cost effectiveness, service quality and adherence to service-level agreements.
  • Manage proactively and transparency the division budget.
  • Provide organization-wide direction in the areas of IT operations, customer service, policy, planning and payment card industry compliance.
  • Work closely with global Save the Children Federation colleagues to significantly shape and influence knowledge beyond Save the Children U.S.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 15 years of progressive IT experience, including ten or more at the leadership level.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or a related field required, advanced degree preferred.
  • Well-rounded knowledge and experience across all areas of IT. Proficiency in IT infrastructure management, information systems, cybersecurity and data privacy.
  • Strong understanding of human centered design principles and approaches to new technology adoption.
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership that is driving digital transformation and implementing innovative technology solutions.
  • Experience as a leader and contributor to organizational operations beyond IT; ability to collaborate with the executive team and serve as an advisor and coach on various matters
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies and their applications for nonprofits.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated experience operating within a large, distributed and multinational organization or company
  • Previously interacted and worked directly with an organization’s board of directors


Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here). Employee may be eligible for an incentive program.  Save the Children also offers paid vacation, accrued at least 12 days a year, depending on paygrade and length of service, paid safety and wellness leave of at least 1 day per month worked for a full time employee which is pro rata reduced for employees working less than a full time schedule, and at least 10 paid holidays a year. Employees may be eligible for additional bonus compensation.
