JOB DESCRIPTION

Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking to recruit a qualified, flexible and enthusiastic education professional to work in the non-formal education programme in Attica as a Teacher. Under the overall supervision of the Education Team Leader, the Teacher will be responsible for implementation of the education programme for migrant and refugee children and youth in the DRC Homework and Creative Activities Centers (HCAC) in the open accommodation site of Schisto in Attica. The Teacher will ensure that all education activities are high quality, age appropriate, and in line with students’ needs.Teacher (Non-Formal Educations) to support its operation in Athens.

Responsibilities:

Implementation and design of non-formal education activities:

  • Implement non-formal education activities for children (4 to 17) as per the populations’ needs, both in-person and online.
  • Plan and implement effective classroom management practices to develop independent learners and students’ ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Collaborate with DRC cultural mediators and other staff members to design and implement relevant education and life skills activities
  • Form class groups and develop schedules in line with the needs of site population and in agreement with the Education Team Leader and the Senior Teacher
  • Complete daily lesson plans and develop differentiated learning material based on age, educational level, and the individual needs of students
  • Plan and support the distribution of teaching and learning material (e.g. stationery, homework packs and school kits)
  • Create a safe classroom environment and promote holistic student well-being
  • Promote empathy, compassion and respect for the gender, ethnic, religious, cultural, and learning diversity of students
  • Organize and deliver on-site parents’ meetings in collaboration with the Senior Teacher, the Education Social Scientist and the Education Team Leader
  • Provide information to beneficiaries on existing education programmes and promote the right to education for all’
  • Contribute to the identification of student vulnerabilities and raise protection concerts to the Education Social Scientist and the Education Team Leader
  • Adhere to DRC’s Code of Conduct and help to create and maintain an environment that prevents child safeguarding violations and promotes the implementation of DRC’s child Safeguarding Policy

Reporting and Education Information Management:

  • Ensure that relevant project data and Means of Verification (e.g. attendance lists, registration forms, lesson plans) are accurately collected
  • Monitor and record students’ attendance and progress, noting any areas for concern to the Senior Teacher and the Education Team Leader
  • Regularly monitor the progress of education activities against project plans and timelines.

Programme Development:

  • Suggest improvements to DRC programming and ways of working, through identification and communication of challenges, gaps, recommendations for improvements and lessons learnt.
  • In collaboration with the Education Team and the Education Team Leader, contribute to the development and design of DRC’s education program and activities.

Accountability.

  • In day-to-day tasks ensure relevant accountability to internal DRC and Donor policies
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Education Team Leader and/or the Project Manager relevant to the achievement of NFE objectives.
  • Any other tasks assigned by the line manager in line with overall response in the area of deployment.

About you

To be successful in this role we expect the following:

Required

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in education and teaching in group/class settings.
  • University degree in Education or in a related field
  • English (excellent verbal and written skills)
  • Greek (excellent verbal and written skills)
  • Strong computer literacy

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching Greek as a foreign language will be considered a strong asset
  • Experience in teaching English as a foreign language will be considered a strong asset
  • Experience in delivering STEM activities will be considered a strong asset
  • Experience in implementing early-childhood education activities will be considered an asset
  • Prior teaching experience with non-Greek speaking students will be considered an asset
  • Prior professional experience working with children will be considered an asset
  • Previous experience with local or international NGOs will be considered an asset
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Strong sense of initiative and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to humanitarian principles
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn from others
  • Ability to multitask and cope with multiple competing demands under tight deadlines
  • Training or courses in child protection/safeguarding and/or NFE will be considered an asset
  • Any additional knowledge of community languages (Arabic, Farsi, French, Russian/Ukrainian) will be considered an asset

Arrival/departure to duty station:

  • The ability to report to the duty station by own means is required.
  • Driver’s license will be considered an asset.

  • Contract Length: Fixed Term under Greek Labor Law

  • Part Time: 6hrs per day
