Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Information Centers (UNICs) belong to the Information Centres Services (ICS), Campaigns and Country Operations (CCOD) of the Department of Global Communication (DGC). The UNICs are the principal sources of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located. They are also responsible for promoting greater public understanding of, and support the aims and activities of, the United Nations by disseminating information on the work of the Organization to people everywhere, especially in developing countries. The Department of Global Communications internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department and availability of intern. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Responsibilities This Internship assignment will focus on creation of Dutch-language content and products for the UNIC’s online platforms and its outreach programme. Main activities will include English to Dutch translation of UNIC material and content, drafting of Dutch-language text, and supporting the maintenance of UNIC’s online (website and regional portal) platforms. The Intern will support the UNIC Social Media Assistant and Team Assistant to plan and execute the following initiative: UNIC Beyond 2030 SDGs Youth Campaign. This campaign aims to mobilize youth in the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint for regional development action that can extend beyond the SDGs’ 2030 deadline. Its core activity will be the creation and management of a WhatsApp group to drive peer engagement with the SDGs, its messages, and calls to action. This campaign will be an ongoing component of the UNIC Caribbean intern programme. Tasks will include: – developing youth-oriented objectives and Dutch-language messaging for the campaign – supporting the development of a mobile ‘SDG Bingo’ application using Unity Hub and/or AR technology – developing Dutch-language terms of reference (including objectives and membership guidelines) for the WhatsApp group – Researching UN System job postings and opportunities for circulation to members of the Group – Creating Dutch-language content (video-scripting/filming/editing) to promote the campaign on Tik Tok and Instagram. The Intern’s duties in support of this campaign and the UNIC’s other daily activities may include but are not limited to: · Assist in the design, production and delivery of Dutch-language digital communications products including drafting and editing content for the UNIC website, regional portal and online platforms. · Assist in the research and compilation of information, and drafting of text, for use in the production of Dutch-language communications material about the UN. . Assist in the scripting and production of UNIC Dutch-language multimedia material and products. · Assist in the updating and maintenance of UNIC online (web site and regional portal) platforms. · Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) Applicants must also: -Be computer literate in standard software applications. -Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. -Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants are not required to have professional experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Written and oral fluency in both English and Dutch is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
