The United Nations (UN) is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the mission and work of the United Nations are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. On September 21, 1971, the Royal Government of Bhutan became the 128th member of the United Nations. The Office of the United Nations in Bhutan was established in early 1974. Since then, the country has been home to many UN agencies, funds and programmes that together support the Government in delivering national development needs and improving the socio-economic conditions of the people of Bhutan. The United Nations Resident Coordinator Office supports the work of the UN Resident Coordinator. The UN Resident Coordinator leads the UN country team in consultations with the Government to define and agree on the UN strategic response to the Government’s development priorities. This response is captured in the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) or United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).

Context

The RCO is committed to promoting sustainable development and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on a global scale. One of the key aspects of the RCO’s work is to monitor and report on the progress made by individual agencies towards achieving these goals. For this purpose, the RCO is seeking the support of talented Online Volunteers with expertise and professional experience in copy editing to edit the United Nations Annual Country Results Report. The Report serves as a comprehensive overview of the progress, challenges, and achievements of Bhutan in relation to the SDGs. It is a vital communication tool that provides stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, civil society organizations, and the general public, with valuable insights into the country’s development efforts.

Task description

The United Nations Resident Cooridnator’s Office (RCO) in Bhutan is seeking for Online Volunteers with expertise and professional experience in copy editing to provide support in editing the Annual Country Results Report for the year 2023. The report serves as a crucial communication tool to showcase the achievements, impact, and progress made by the United Nations in Bhutan over the past year. We are looking for Online Volunteers who under the guidance of the Assistant Development Coordination Officer- Programme Communications and Advocacy for the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO), Bhutan. The Online Volunteers will support with the following: 1. Review the text for the report for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and typographical errors. Ensure consistency in language, style, and formatting throughout the document. 2. Edit the text for clarity, coherence, and conciseness, ensuring that it effectively communicates the key messages and objectives of the report. Identify and rectify any language that may be ambiguous or difficult to understand. 3. Verify the accuracy of facts, figures, and data presented in the report, cross-referencing with reliable sources as needed. Ensure consistency in terminology, terminology, and formatting. 4. Maintain consistency in the tone and style of writing, adhering to the United Nations’ editorial guidelines and ensuring that the language is appropriate for the intended audience. 5. Work closely with the RCO to address any questions, concerns, or feedback related to the editing process. Communicate effectively to ensure that the final edited version meets their expectations and requirements. 6. The project timeline will be agreed upon mutually, with an expected completion date for the final edited version of the Annual Results Report. Deliverables will include edited drafts, tracked changes, and the final polished version of the report ready for publication.

Requirements

Required experience

• Proven experience in copy editing, preferably with experience working on reports, publications, or similar materials. • Excellent command of English language, with strong grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills. • Attention to detail and a meticulous approach to editing and proofreading. • Familiarity with the United Nations’ editorial guidelines or experience working in an international context is preferred but not required.
