UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Protection Unit at UNHCR Irbid.
Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities, and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women, and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions.

Organizational context
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is an international organization dedicated to protecting the rights of refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people.
The Syria crisis has generated over 6.6 million internally displaced persons and more than 5.6 million refugees in the surrounding countries and beyond. Over 660,000 Syrian refugees are currently registered with UNHCR in Jordan.
UNHCR works closely with the Government of Jordan and numerous other national and international partners in providing protection and assistance to refugees and asylum seekers, as well as to Jordanian communities hosting a high number of refugees.

The UNHCR Irbid Field Office covers the urban refugees living in Irbid, Jarash, and Ajlun governorates. The Office oversees more than 140,000 refugees registered in the area covered by the field Office including the urban camp (Garden Camp).

UNHCR’s protection work is guided by the International and National Laws and applicable UN/UNHCR and IASC policies, Protection procedures, and Codes of Conduct. Protection is one of the key priority areas for the country Programme refugee response in Jordan.

The Protection unit in the Field Office of Irbid is in charge of several aspects of the protection response that includes child protection, prevention and response to Gender-based violence, legal assistance, and Community-based interventions. It is also in charge of chairing coordination structures with the operational partners with the aim of strengthening the activities implemented by the humanitarian actors for prevention, identification, and response to protection concerns. The protection unit is also actively engaged with the implementation of the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, and capacity-building activities.
The position
The Protection intern normally reports to the most senior Protection staff. The incumbent provides functional and administrative support to the protection unit on protection-related liaison, correspondence, documentation, counseling, case management, and reporting activities.

Duties and responsibilities
• Support the preparation of monthly, weekly, and other reports.
• Collaborate with team members to create engaging reports, summaries, and presentations, utilizing Microsoft applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure comprehensive meeting documentation, and summarize key discussions, decisions, and action items.
• Support the documentation of events and activities including taking pictures and producing reports.
• Support in translating documents and presentations from English to Arabic and vice versa, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
• Support in communication with partners or other entities through phone calls or emails.
• Support in communication with refugees and addressing their concerns as requested.
• Support the organization of community events.
• Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

Desirable qualifications and skills
• Proficiency in both Arabic and English. Ability to translate documents accurately between the two languages.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to create, edit, and format documents and presentations.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Self-motivated, positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.00 am to 3:45 pm Sunday to Thursday (37 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Irbid
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party, will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
