Job Purpose and Organizational Context

Under the guidance of the Senior Human Rights Officer-AUCF and direct supervision of the Deputy Project Coordinator (HRO, P4), the incumbent will provide safe driving services to the AUCF Project Team and other relevant stakeholders, and high-profile visitors as required with the highest standards of discretion, integrity, and responsibility. The Driver must have excellent knowledge of security issues and a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact, and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

The driver works in close collaboration with OHCHR/UNDP and national authorities to ensure safe and reliable transportation and protocol services as required. In doing all this he/she ensures the maintenance of the profile, dignity, and confidentiality of the office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provision of reliable and secure driving services 

  • Transport UNOHCHR and other UN visitors or officials applying appropriate protocols
  • Deliver and collect mail and documents and perform other messenger responsibilities.
  • Meet official personnel and visitors at the airport and assist with visa and customs formality arrangement when required.

Proper use of vehicle including daily maintenance and documentation 

  • Maintain accurate daily vehicle logs, Insurance renewal, annual vehicle annual inspection, plate process to the newly procured, plate return for the disposed vehicles and collection of Performa cost as required.
  • Provide inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  • Make timely minor repairs and/or arrange for major repairs
  • Ensure timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc
  • Keep current in vehicle documents such as vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, and map of the city/country.
  • Ensure vehicles are in Compliance with UN Rules and Regulation and vehicle first aid kit is adequately stocked with standard medical supplies.
  • Timely inform the administration Analyst when maintenance service is required
  • Takes care of day-to-day maintenance services of the vehicle, check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc

Ensure UNSMS, UN properties and Assets Safety and Security while on board and enroute, 

  • Apply defensive driving principles at all times and conditions
  • Ensures that the steps, rules, and regulations are taken in case of reporting an accident
  • Timely reporting of accidents to direct supervisor, field level UNDSS and local police/traffic
  • Collect and share facts with medical personnel and police officers, when necessary.
  • Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts.
  • Deal effectively and tactfully with officials and visitors that use his/her vehicle

Performs other duties as assigned by the office 

  • Support programme and operations team in delivering and receiving messages to and from/to partners
  • Additional duties may include assisting with pouch collection, Willingness to be assigned for after working hour duties, support procurement as needed, assist the staff during workshops and office retreat, reporting cost-recovery for the services provided by the office, assist in the reconciliation of the year-end physical verification exercise and other administrative tasks.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • Secondary school Education, 3rd grade driver’s license,
Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years (with high school diploma) of relevant work experience as a driver with a safe driving record and a valid 3rd grade driving license is required.
  • Minimum 1 year work experience with UN and Humanitarian/Development NGOs as a driver; safe driving record, and knowledge of driving regulations, rules and laws as well as skills in minor vehicle repair and maintenance is an advantage.
  • Experience in the basic use of computers and relevant office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and ability to use web-based management and electronic log, file and/or scheduling systems.
  • Knowledge of protocols, courtesies, and security requirements is an advantage.
  • Preferably with a diploma in Auto Mechanics and related fields of study.
  • Skills in vehicle maintenance, training/certificate on defensive driving, and computer literacy is an advantage.

Language:

  • English is the working language of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Fluency in the national language of the duty station is required and fluency in the local language of the duty station is desirable.
Please note that continuance of appointment beyond the initial 12 months is contingent upon the successful completion of a probationary period.
