Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s International Methane Observatory (IMEO), within the Climate Change Division, exists to deliver improvement across research, reporting and regulation and connecting this information to the individuals who have agency to reduce methane emissions. Launched at COP28 in late 2023, the IMEO Methane Data Platform focuses initially on emissions from the fossil industry. It reconciles methane data from scientific measurement studies, satellites through the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national inventories. The Public facing platform will require an accessible, easy-to-understand geospatial data visualization that will: – Integrate various data streams to show aggregated methane data in an approachable manner – Ensure the geo-spatial and two-dimensional data vizualisations demonstrates the IMEO narrative on integrating multiple streams of data, including location, reporting data, science studies and satellite imagery to reflect the most reliable, scientific, and actionable data for those with agency to act on methane emissions. – Develop one geospatial view with potentially customized views for power users such as governments and companies. Develop 2D representations of data as required. There will be a strong requirement to work closely with the UX designer. While the Geo-spatial Data Vizualization Consultant will be resposible for the visualizing the data, both in terms of the map, but also 2d representation, specifically how it looks, how it behaves, how the data is fed, front-end development of those elements, the UX designer will be responsible for the product that encapsulates the map; the IA, the UI, the overall end to end experience.
Qualifications/special skills
At least 10 years of experience working on environmental data projects or geospatial data visualizations, handling both design, code and associated API is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English is required
Additional Information
a. Overarching Objectives 1. Visualization Development Design and develop an interactive geo-spatial data visualization platform for Global Methane Emissions. This platform should serve as an actionable tool for power users (governments, companies) and an educational tool for the public. Consideration for customization per power segment is suggested. The individual will be required to collaborate closely collaboration with the overall platform UX/UI designer, ensuring consistency in look and feel as well as user journey and experience. 2. Scalable and Adaptable Platform Ensure the platform’s data visualization and experience design are scalable and adaptable to match the evolving needs of different user segments, incorporating advancements in data, technology, and user feedback. 3. Data Accessibility Make complex methane emission data accessible, integrating various data streams into a user-friendly interface that simplifies data exploration and interpretation. 4. Integration with Existing UNEP Data Systems Enhance the platform’s utility within UNEP’s environmental monitoring framework by ensuring integration with current UNEP data systems for accurate data representation. The individual will be required to work closely with the UNEP Data and dev teams to deliver on product. 5. Documentation Provide comprehensive documentation to support developers and internal teams in understanding and working with the platform. 6. Data Visualization Product Refinement Continuously refine the data visualization component based on feedback from the development team. b. Output expectations 1. Figma Design Delivery Deliver the geo-spatial data visualization design in Figma, aligning with the platform’s overall design strategy. 2. Prototype Development Deliver a functioning prototype that integrates with the UNEP technical stack. 3. Beta Release Integration and Delivery Ensure the platform is ready for beta release, integrating all necessary components. 4. Continuous Refinement Make refinements and improvements as needed throughout the consultancy period. 5.
