• Effective follow-up to relevant intergovernmental process; • High quality and well drafted reports on intergovernmental processes in UN Headquarters. • Analysis of the intergovernmental processes well researched and synergies and complementarities among them identified. • Meeting with internal staff and with external counterparts organized efficiently and according to protocol: accurate, succinct and timely, and reports prepared. • Effective support to the UNEP New York Office on related workstreams as required.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The UN Environment New York Office is a bridge builder, specialized in establishing and maintaining critical links with the UN Secretariat, UN organizations and entities headquartered in New York, Permanent Missions to the UN, civil society organizations, academic institutions and others. The New York Office provides strategic policy guidance in the context of the UN’s work on sustainable development. The Office represents UNEP at the intergovernmental level at UNHQ, including at the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), among many others. The New York office also supports the inter-agency processes on sustainable development ensuring that environmental sustainability is effectively integrated in the UN system operations and programmes. The Office ensures that UNEP’s voice and guidance on environmental policy issues are considered in the deliberations which take place at UNHQ, both in intergovernmental and interagency processes. Under the overall guidance of the Director of the New York Office and the direct supervision of the Intergovernmental Affairs Senior Programme Officer, and in close coordination with Divisions and Regional Offices, as appropriate, the contractor will undertake the following responsibilities: i. Follow-up of and contribute to intergovernmental processes in the framework of the UN Headquarters, in particular the preparation of the Summit of the Future and other high-level events, following-up deliberations and preparing draft reports on these intergovernmental processes, including the preparations of the events during the week of the General Assembly general debate; ii. Undertake analysis of the processes described in the previous paragraph, identifying synergies and complementarities, and making strategic recommendations on how to take advantage of them; iii. Prepare policy briefing documents on environmental sustainability and sustainable development related to intergovernmental processes.
Qualifications/special skills
Master’s degree or equivalent in Economics, Law, Environment, Sustainable Development Studies, or another related field with substantial coursework in sustainable development or similar areas. A bachelor’s degree plus at least three additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s degree. A minimum of four years of accumulated work experience in international development, strategic planning and advocacy on sustainable development, in intergovernmental processes at the UN and/or international organization, including experience with policy research and analysis.
Languages
Fluency in written and spoken English is required, proficiency in other UN official language is desired.
