Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’ s goals are: a) to advance understanding of crime-related problems; b) to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; c) to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; d) to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. See more information on www.unicri.org. This position is located within UNICRI’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in the Hague, The Netherlands. The internship is for an initial period of 2 months, which can be extended up to a total period of 6 months, starting in June 2024 or at a different date, depending on the availability of the successful candidate. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work 5 days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the programme, project or unit to which they are assigned. Applicants for this internship position are expected to undertake the work in a hybrid modality, i.e., applicants are expected to work from the premises in The Hague, The Netherlands, as well as remotely. Applicants must have all necessary arrangements and equipment (including a computer and internet connection) to perform assignments in teleworking. Under the supervision of the Head of the Centre, the intern will assist in the implementation of the activities of UNICRI’s Centre for AI and Robotics, in particular building knowledge and understanding of the risks and benefits of AI and related emerging technologies from the perspective of crime, terrorism and other threats to security through awareness-raising, education and the exchange of information. Examples of duties to be performed by the intern may include: − Provide support on the configuration of Drupal websites. − Import and upload available content, such as text, documents, images, videos, etc., in a visually appealing way. − Participate in the evaluation of the effectiveness of technical elements and make recommendations for improvements. − Assist in editing, updating and uploading news onto Drupal websites. − Monitor local, regional and international sources for relevant trends, developments, technological innovations, articles and news items. − Communicate project status, issues and risk factors to the project team. − Participate in determining technical requirements and planning technical aspects of various Centre projects. − Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants who meet the following requirements are preferred: – Have studied web applications design and development such as PHP, MySQL or a related field. – Have knowledge and experience with Drupal. – Have knowledge of criminal justice, cybercrime, or artificial intelligence. – Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. – Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and view. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Experience with developing Drupal custom code and core API and commonly used contributed modules is desirable. Experience with conducting front-end development is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.​
