JOB DESCRIPTION

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

FHI 360 is a nonprofit human development organization dedicated to improving lives in lasting ways by advancing integrated, locally driven solutions. FHI 360’s Crisis Response team has been responding to the humanitarian emergency in Northern Ethiopia through an integrated health, nutrition, WASH, and Protection project to meet the critical needs of the conflict-affected population. FHI 360 aims to expand its reach to the Somali Region in Eastern Ethiopia to meet the immediate needs of the drought-affected population and will be implementing integrated humanitarian programming with the Ethiopia-based national organization, Pastoralist Concern (PC).

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the supervision of the GBV Coordinator, the Protection Officer will take lead on day-to-day activities; work across various departments, collaborate with the other Sector Specialists to oversee GBV Prevention and Response activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES

  • Conduct sector needs assessments, provide technical guidance on appropriate emergency activities and devise sector-specific response strategies focusing on community engagement in prevention activities, and Case Management and Psychosocial support.
  • Assess community – based infrastructure and service-provider capabilities, identify support needs and gaps.
  • Oversee the delivery of quality protection services, including case management, health services, psychosocial support, legal assistance, and referrals, ensuring the safety and dignity of survivors.
  • Develop/enhance partnerships with local service providers, implementing partners, and local government entities to build strong networks and collaborations for the protection of vulnerable individuals and communities.
  • Represent FHI 360 in coordination forums, including protection cluster and GBV AoR/Sub – cluster, working groups, and meetings with government entities, advocating for the integration of protection and GBV concerns into broader humanitarian and development initiatives.
  • Work with operation staff to ensure commodities are procured, handled, and managed properly.
  • Work with technical and management coordinators of FHI 360’s Crisis Response team in identifying needs; target locations, supply chain routes, actors, and mechanisms to ensure time-critical assistance is delivered to affected people.
  • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders to strengthen community-based mechanisms for preventing and responding to GBV, including awareness-raising activities and training sessions.
  • Work closely with MEAL designing indicators for assessing progress with Protection interventions.
  • Manage and mentor Protection Assistants and GBV Social Service Workers
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Humanitarian Studies, Social Works, Gender Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Law, Public Administration, Political Sciences, or related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years working experience in GBV Protection and Counselling or Gender integration at the national or international level.
  • Master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • Experience in dealing with issues of women’s rights and Gender Equality within public institutions and/or international organizations required.
  • Solid understanding and working experience of safeguarding and accountability.
  • Fluent in local language and excellent in English.
