Your team

Within the The European Green Sky Directorate, “Aviation Sustainability” leads and manages the Agency’s activities towards the EU and its agencies, ICAO, States and other stakeholders in support to their environment, climate-change and related polities.

As the new Sustainability Modeler and Impact Assessment Expert, you will develop models, metrics, and applications to assess the environmental and climate impacts of aviation. This involves evaluating: Aircraft emissions, including CO2 and non-CO2 pollutants; Noise pollution from aircraft and drones; Local air quality in and around airports.

Your role

Your role will be to:

  • Contribute to EUROCONTROL’s involvement in key research, innovation, and deployment projects with focus on aviation sustainability topics.
  • Apply cutting-edge data science and optimisation techniques to develop, validate, and deploy new models and metrics for assessing aviation’s environmental impact.
  • Analyse current and future environmental impacts of aviation using EUROCONTROL’s proprietary tools (IMPACT, Open-ALAQS, AEM, R-NEST, etc.), as well as other applicable methods and tools.
  • Conduct comprehensive analyses and produce reports, technical documentation, scientific articles, and presentations. Create awareness materials to advocate for eco-friendly operational practices.
  • Follow latest evolutions in field of data science including models, algorithms and tools, and share best practices within the internal community.
  • Carry out any other task in line with the main purpose of the job.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies

  • Completed university studies of at least 4 years in a relevant domain (e.g., Mathematics, Computing Science, etc.) followed by a minimum of 3 years of relevant working experience. PhD in a relevant domain would be an asset.
  • Internal candidates can check on the intranet to see what level of in-house experience is considered equivalent to educational qualifications where appropriate.
  • Strong knowledge in mathematics and statistics, including knowledge of distributions, statistical testing, regression, and forecasting.
  • Strong knowledge in machine learning, particularly in areas such as structured data prediction, computer vision, and natural language processing.
  • Programming skills at least in Python and SQL; database management, including creation and optimisation, with DevOps practices.
  • Knowledge of optimisation algorithms.
  • As an asset:

o Knowledge of aviation and Air Traffic Management (ATM).
o Knowledge in aviation emissions, noise, local air quality; aircraft performance.
o Knowledge in climate science, meteorology and/or chemistry.

    The levels relate to the European-framework-reference Common European Framework of References for languages (CEFR).

Useful information

  • Applications will be accepted from nationals of EUROCONTROL Member States only.
  • The selected candidate will be offered a contract of 5 Year (s) pursuant to the provisions of the Staff Regulations governing officials at EUROCONTROL. The contract may be renewed up to a maximum of 9 years or converted into an undetermined contract. Before being established in the post, the selected candidate will be requested to provide certified copies of their degrees and successfully serve a probationary period of 9 months.
  • Internal candidates
    If selected, the person will keep their current type of appointment duration (undetermined or determined).
    The internal staff member with a determined contract will be offered, in principle, an appointment for 5 Year(s) with a maximum total duration of 9 years.
  • The successful candidate shall be appointed at the grade set out in this vacancy notice, or if a group of grades has been published for a job level, in principle at the basic grade of the published job level.
  • Candidates declared suitable who are not selected for the post will be placed on a reserve list for similar roles. The reserve list will be valid for one year from the closing date of applications.
