Duties and Responsibilities
This position is in the United Nations Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre (UN-GGKIC), Statistics Division (SD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), based in Deqing, China. The interns report to the Senior Geospatial Information Officer. The Centre’s overarching goal is to work towards the ambitions of implementation of the United Nations Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (UN-IGIF) set by Member States, to develop capacity, promote and support the required innovation, leadership, coordination and standards to develop, strengthen, integrate and deliver national geospatial information policy, data, systems, tools, services and capabilities into their national government development policies, strategies and arrangements. The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours). The unpaid internship is designed to be in person and full-time at the Huzhou (Deqing) duty station. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also offer a Flexible Work Arrangement to be conducted fully remote, hybrid (in-person and remote), part-time, and/or temporary FWA. The Interns will be responsible for the following duties in general for specific projects: • Supports and contributes to the implementation of projects and activities aligned with the Centre’s Framework Plan, focusing on policy guidance, knowledge sharing, technical and capacity development initiatives; • Assists in the development of approaches and guidance to enhance national geospatial information policy, data, systems, tools, and services integration into government development policies and strategies; • Performs methodological research in geospatial technologies, methodologies, processes, and data sources to advance the Centre’s overarching goals; • Prepares draft documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports; • Assists in the organization of seminars, working groups and expert meetings; • Assists with communication, data storytelling and data visualization (infographics) and outreach efforts; • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). (c) knowledge of GIS, RS, GNSS and Integration. Internships do not require work experience.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Chinese or other UN official language is an advantage.
