Duties and Responsibilities
The Office of the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (OSE) was established with the mandate to enhance the voices of women in peace processes across the continent. The activities of the Special Envoy are anchored on the pillars of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, namely the prevention of violence against women, the protection of women’s rights, the participation of women at all levels of decision-making in the prevention of conflict and peacebuilding and the recognition and incorporation of gender dimensions in reconstruction and recovery endeavors. As part of UNOAU’s longstanding and continued partnership with the African Union Commission in promoting the Women, Peace, and Security agenda in Africa within the joint UN – AUC farmwork for enhanced partnership in peace and security, UNOAU is seeking to recruit a consultant to serve as COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER for the office of the AU OSE-WPS. Under the supervision of Chief of Staff of the African Union Office of Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, the Communications Officer will support the Office in the following functions. The communication officer will be required to undertake the following: 2.1. Communication Strategy • Update the Office communication strategy; • Ensure adherence to the branding and visibility strategy of AUC in all communications, such as the use of promotional materials, the effective use of the media in promoting the work of the office and the effective distribution and dissemination of information. • Determine target groups, messages, channels and key products for effective visibility and impact of the WPS activities • Facilitate the production and dissemination of WPS videos and their dissemination through AU media channels, Twitter, YouTube and Other digital channels • In addition to the video messages, produce short films and animation messages to be aired through different media and shared with WPS Networks throughout the Continent. • Perform media analysis with data on outreach and impact 2.2. Media relations: • Establish and maintain supportive networks for regional and international dissemination of WPS initiatives • Identify outreach and media opportunities and write related press releases and media advisories and disseminate to broad and up-to-date mailing lists. • Track and promote media coverage of high impact/visibility activities. 2.3. Publicity and external communications: • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure a coherent approach to communication initiatives related to the reporting and monitoring of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda • Widely disseminate news using various mediums including the website, social media accounts, and the post-event publications and mailing lists. • Guide photographers and videographers in the production of videos and photos. • Oversee the design, development and launch of online information on OSE’s work. • Administer the design work and printing of various publications. • Catalogue and build an active audio-visual storage and library (press releases, articles) containing all materials. • Develop branding and writing style guide (part of the communications strategy). • Support the communication activities of the Office linked to the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), and other related women groups.
Qualifications/special skills
A degree in Communication, Journalism, Political science, Gender studies, Peace and Security or a related field with a minimum of seven years’ relevant experience. Experience in the design and management of advocacy campaigns will constitute a solid advantage.
Languages
Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of French will constitute an advantage.
Additional Information
This consultant will be based at the AU Office of Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security and will be working under the direct supervision of the Chief of Staff of the Special Envoy WPS.
