JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description

Are you a mechanical engineer with experience in finite element simulations? Are you interested to take part in the mechanical modelling for the design of superconducting magnets?

As a Mechanical Engineer, the main topics of your role will cover the development of a 12 T dipole magnet prototype for particle accelerators, in the framework of the High Field Magnets program (HFM) in view of the Future Circular Collider (FCC). The work will be carried out in the section SMT (Superconducting Magnet Technology) of the MSC Group (Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostat), of the Technology Department.

Main responsibilities:

• Develop the mechanical model of an accelerator dipole, both in 2D and 3D (static case);

• Explore the possible options for the design, in particular for mechanical robustness;

• Benchmark the model, in close interaction with the team building and measuring;

• Use of the model to interpret the experimental data of mock-ups and first prototyping activities;

• Generate the documentation to build a comprehensive magnet finite element analysis history.

  • Use of Python to develop routine and data processing;
  • Experience in building finite element ANSYS models (Workbench and knowledge APDL language scripts);
  • Experience in finite element codes used for static problems of mechanics;
  • Basic knowledge of cryogenics material and structural design;
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
