Your team

Within the The European Green Sky Directorate, the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub (EIH) carries out research, innovation and simulation activities to help improve European aviation performance, safety and sustainability, bridging the gap between R&D and operations. The EIH also addresses emerging new technologies as well as deployment of drones and urban air mobility systems.

As a Junior System Engineer, you will contribute as per demand to operations, development, design and validation of new Air Transport/Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts as well as to any necessary adjustments the Simulation Platforms for SESAR and other R&I projects, working groups and/or studies related to the Innovation Programmes activities.

Your role

Your role will be to:

  • Contribute to platform evolutions by capturing and analysing user needs, translating them into engineering specifications to support the development of innovative software solutions, or operating platforms, as well as contributing to the operations with necessary technical know-how.
  • Participate to the research projects validation exercises while ensuring platform technical operations.
  • Contribute to the testing, acceptance and set-up of the simulation platform releases and associated tools, reporting platform issues and identify corrective actions.
  • Support in the installation, maintenance and set up of the simulation platform and associated tools.
  • Create, review and manage system requirement specifications for new concepts/systems and coordinate requirements and interfaces with stakeholders. Provide support to the Simulation Platform Development team with platform evolutions, validation exercise debriefings, meetings and lessons learned.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation as needed.
  • Carry out any other task in line with the main purpose of the job.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies

  • University degree of at least 4 years in a relevant domain (e.g. Mathematics, Computing Science, etc.) followed by minimum 1 year relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in an engineering discipline with a broad general understanding of engineering and design methodologies.
  • Experience or knowledge of analysing operational needs and translating them into system requirements (System Requirement Document) – in the context of large engineering systems.
  • Knowledge in modelling, algorithm design and software development/Linux and shell scripting.
  • Technical drafting skills (English).
  • The following would be considered as an asset:
    • Experience or knowledge in Aviation or in Air Traffic Management / Air Navigation Services (ATM/ANS)
    • Experience in SESAR/Research and Innovation projects.
    • Experience or knowledge in agile development methodologies.
    • Experience or knowledge in simulators or training systems.
  • Ability to anticipate and implement alternatives as risk mitigation measures.

  • The working languages of the Agency are English and French. For this particular job, candidates must be proficient users of English at level C1/C2. The selected candidate will be required to become at least a basic user of French at level A1/A2 before the end of the probation period. The levels relate to the European-framework-reference Common European Framework of References for languages (CEFR).

Useful information

  • The selected candidate will be offered a contract of 3 Year(s) and it may be renewed up to a maximum of 9 years or converted into an undetermined contract pursuant to the provisions of the Conditions of Employment of Contract Staff at EUROCONTROL. Before being established in the post, he/she will be requested to provide certified copies of his/her degrees and successfully serve a probationary period of 9 months.
  • The successful candidate shall be engaged in principle at the basic grade of the advertised grades.
  • Candidates declared suitable who are not selected for the post will be placed on a reserve list for similar roles. The reserve list will be valid for one year from the closing date of applications.
