JOB DESCRIPTION

Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women has been implementing a joint project with UNFPA titled, Women and girls at the centre of gender-based violence prevention and response in Kachin State, Myanmar. Funded by the French Government, this project aims to respond to the emergency needs of gender-based violence (GBV) for women and girls, people who at risk of GBV through livelihood support, access to lifesaving services.

UN Women requires a consultant to help raise awareness of the project. The consultant will be responsible for producing high-quality visual materials that will showcase the impact and achievements of the project, as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by the women who take part in the project activities. The consultant will also need to coordinate and collaborate with the project staff and local partners to ensure smooth implementation of the assignment and respect for the local context.

The consultant will communicate regularly with the Project Manager and the communications officer, who will provide feedback and approval for the deliverables.

The consultant will report to the Project Manager, and will be supported by the Communications Specialist, who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities/ Scope of Work

The consultant will be responsible for producing high-quality visual materials that showcase the impact and achievements of the gender-based violence prevention and response project. The consultant should have a good understanding of UN Women’s work, particularly in the area of gender-based violence prevention and response.

The scope of work for the consultant is divided into three stages:

  1. Pre-production: The consultant will liaise with the project staff and local partners to plan and prepare for the field visits. This includes identifying the locations, participants, and stories for the visual materials, as well as obtaining the necessary permissions and consent forms. Deliverables: A detailed plan for the field visits, including a list of locations, participants, and stories to be covered.
  2. Production: The consultant will conduct the field visits to film, interview, and photograph the women and the project activities. Deliverables: Raw footage and photographs from the field visits.
  3. Post-production: The consultant will edit and produce the final videos and photos, in accordance with the specified requirements and UN Women branding. Deliverables: Two main story videos (5-minutes each), five 30-second social media clips, a set of 40-50 high-quality photos documenting the projects, and an additional 10-20 photos of women in the village for b roader communication use.

The deliverables should meet the following quality standards and criteria:

  • Relevance: The visual materials should accurately and effectively convey the aims, impact, and achievements of the project, as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by the women participating in the project.
  • Technical quality: The videos and photos should be of high technical quality, with clear audio and visuals, and professional editing and post-production.
  • Branding: The final edit of the videos must align with UN Women branding, including the use of the UN Women logo, colour scheme, and fonts.
  • Captions: The videos need to have English captions, which accurately reflect the content of the interviews and are free of spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Ethics and safety: The visual materials should be produced in accordance with ethical and safety principles, including obtaining informed consent from the participants, respecting their privacy and dignity, and ensuring their safety and well-being.

Payment will be made on receipt of all deliverables.

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel

As part of this assignment, there will be a maximum of three trips to two project locations. The consultant will be accompanied in the field by project staff from UN Women’s local implementing partners.

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Technical credibility in producing high quality video content for various platforms, including social media.
  • Technical credibility in producing high quality photographs for various media, including social media and print.
  • Proficiency in professional photography equipment and photo editing software (e.g. Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.)
  • Proficiency in professional video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, etc.)
  • Strong storytelling skills to create engaging and informative content that resonates with diverse audiences.

Required Skills and Experience

Expertise and specialized knowledge:

  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience producing quality photographs and video.
  • Photography and videography: Demonstrated expertise in professional photography and videography, particularly in creating compelling visual narratives. Experience in documentary-style storytelling is highly desirable.
  • Gender-based violence (GBV) awareness: Prior experience working on projects related to gender-based violence, human rights, or other sensitive social issues. Demonstrated understanding of the ethical considerations and sensitivities involved in interviewing and photographing crisis-affected, vulnerable populations.
  • Community engagement: Proven track record of working in rural and remote communities. Ability to engage effectively with local populations, including women and girls, in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner.

Education and Certification:

Languages:

  • Fluency in Myanmar language required.
  • Working knowledge of English an asset but not necessary.
