The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

 

Job Purpose

 

Under the direct supervision of the Specialist, Content and Brand, the Senior Assistant for Photo and Video will capture digital photographs and support video documentation for general use in the production of IRRI articles, social media materials, campaign publications, and website content; develop and implement an IRRI strategic imagery plan; evaluate needs and deliver photography training; manage and improve photograph storage and access; and support the production of videos.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • Provide photographic services for IRRI events, on-site lab or field shoot requests, portraiture, and more, including but not limited to planning shoots and taking images, processing images, conducting quality control, and image cataloguing and distribution/storage.
  • Evaluate photography training needs and deliver training and capacity building as required.
  • Lead improvements i.e. curation, organizing, etc. to the current IRRI photo banks and online tools e.g Flickr.
  • Lead photo post-production coloring/correcting work and do the occasional video splicing for rough drafts.
  • Ensure appropriate sensitivity (cultural, gender, etc.) towards the people they are photographing or taking videos of and to adhere to any relevant laws and rights.
  • Assist in developing and implementing standards for photo and video storing/archiving, cataloging, keywording, etc.
  • Proactively engage with all IRRI units for potential photography-related needs and requirements to help drive FCR opportunities.
  • Design a photo asset-sharing process by which IRRI is able to extend its photographic assets to active external IRRI and in turn, gain access to the same assets of the partner (where IRRI’s work and people are reflected).
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an IRRI strategic imagery plan that meets current needs and addresses opportunities.
  • Maintain and keep in optimal performance all photo and video equipment and accessories
  • Coordinate and implement photography needs, requirements, and access across all IRRI offices

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Fine Arts (Film, Visual Communication, Photography, Interactive Digital Media)
  • Qualifications as a professional photographer and a demonstrated minimum of 5 years’ experience as a professional photographer/videographer or combined

  • Above average use knowledge of Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop or any other photo editing/manipulation software. Knowledgeable in Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing
  • Must be adept in the technical use and operation of photographic equipment (cameras, lenses, lights, filters, tripods), as well as photo-related image and video editing software.

Preferred

  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of interactive media and new digital channels.
  • Experience in video shooting/editing/production will be an advantage.
  • Must exercise flexibility to respond appropriately to team or client requests
