The role of the Communications Unit is to adopt UNDP’s global communication strategy to a local context and the Country Office development priorities. Through the production of high-quality communication materials and innovative use of relevantly targeted communication channels (internal and external), the communications team works collaboratively to position UNDP as a leader in the peace and development arena, promote visibility of UNDP programme outcomes and results, mobilize support for Sustainable Development Goals, and practice delivery as one UN.

The Communications Analyst works in close collaboration with the Programme, Operations and project teams, staff of other UN Agencies, UNDP Communications Region and HQ staff, local counterparts, national and international media, donors, and civil society to ensure successful implementation of UNDP’s communication strategy, ensuring high quality and accuracy of work.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide support to the planning, design and execution of internal and external communication strategies and outreach:

  • Prepare and conduct communications needs assessments for the office (e.g., for projects, the programme, and corporate change initiatives).
  • Provide input to the office communications and outreach strategy based on office strategic priorities and the UNDP External Communication Action Plan.
  • Provide communication input during the project and programme formulation stage to integrate communication needs and strategies in all aspects of UNDP programme and projects.
  • Provide input to and draft stories for local media to increase coverage and understanding of the UNDP’s work as guided by the UNDP External Communications Action Plan.
  • Prepare media advisories and press-releases on the activities of the programme/project in English and oversee and quality assure translation into local languages.
  • Oversee and coordinate the planning and execution of communications related events.
  • Maintaining close contact with the media representatives, providing support to building partnership with the media.
  • Ensure all communications activities are in accordance with relevant guidelines including donor visibility guidelines and coordination with stakeholders for dissemination.
  • Ensure regular monitoring of the media and inform designate staff on issues of relevance to UNDP and donors.
  • Develop Terms of Reference for different communications needs (i.e., photographers, videographers).
  • Ensure Compliance with contract conditions, rules, regulations, policies, and internal control mechanisms for communications related services and products.
  • Manage contracts of communications related suppliers and consultants as assigned.
  • Review of communications payment requests obtain certification for receipt of services and products.

Ensure the implementation of the office communications products and publications strategy and plan:

  • Manage the production of communications products and publications activities, such as drafting articles, media releases, scripts, speeches, blogs etc. and content management in line with corporate guidelines and conduct activities that ensure effective communication with targeted audience(s).
  • Maintain regular contact with communications suppliers to ensure high quality production and publications dissemination.

Provide technical support to UNDP digital communications in country office that includes social media, web site, intranet, and CO web-based knowledge management system:

  • Ensuring regular updates of digital communications channels including preparation of information, drafting of posts and regular updates of the projects website and social media accounts.
  • Upload stories, articles, publications, and press releases to web sites and manage content for social media.
  • Design digital content and collect content from the office programmes and projects, and make ready for website and social media,
  • Support embedding digital in UNDP’s programming as per UNDP Digital Strategy.

Contribute to UNDP’s campaign initiatives to engage different stakeholders (i.e. donors, media and public) and increase awareness of UNDP’s mandate and goals: 

  • Promote and disseminate corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications such as the Human Development Report.
  • Promote and maintain public information campaigns on issues, including UNDP activities, Sustainable Development Goals and UN Reform.
  • Prepare and disseminate newsletters as well as draft and produce regular updates to donors, donor reports, civic education, and community awareness and engagement, to support projects.
  • Develop and produce other communication and advocacy materials for marketing and awareness-raising campaigns, including briefing and media materials in coordination with the supervisor.
  • Support implementation/mainstreaming of disability-inclusive communications across the programme/projects including development of inclusive content for various communication channels.

Assist with the office’s knowledge management and dissemination:

  • Provide support to Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme goals and activities.
  • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories.
  • Assist in providing training for UNDP staff on internal and external knowledge management.
  • The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

The Communications Analyst will be based at the UNDP local office in Nicosia. He/She will be reporting to the Head of Office.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or related field is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in the areas mentioned above in combination with an additional 2 years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the Master’s degree.
Experience:
  • Up to 2 years (with Master’s degree) or 2 years (with Bachelor’s degree) of relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, advocacy, or communications.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English, Turkish and/or Greek is required.

Required skills:

  • Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and advanced knowledge of web-based management systems such as ERP.

Desired skills:

  • Additional years of relevant progressive experience will be considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with multicultural working environment will be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience working on peacebuilding/confidence building projects will be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience working in the Cyprus context will be considered will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in working, liaising, and collaborating with government institutions, NGOs, civil society organizations, and public international organizations will be considered an asset.
