Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This internship is located in the UNEP Europe Office in Geneva. The intern will work with the Secretariat of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. The Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the “Tehran Convention” named after the city where it was adopted in 2003, is the first legally binding regional agreement signed by all five Caspian littoral States, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan. It lays down the general requirements and the institutional mechanism for environmental protection in the Caspian region. Under the direct supervision of the UNEP Regional Coordinator and in collaboration with the Tehran Convention Officer, the intern will: – Assist to resource mobilization activities supporting the implementation of the Tehran Convention (TC) and its Protocols in line with the Rolling Work Programme of the Tehran Convention; – Assist in caring out desk studies on the priority actions for the implementation of the TC and its auxiliary Protocols; – Assist with drafting written outputs related to the ongoing project preparations including but not limited to, concept papers and notes prepared by the TC Secretariat; – Assist with identification of potential donors and partners supporting the implementation of the Rolling Work Programme of the Tehran Convention; – Assist with drafting communications to the Caspian Governments, project partners, and other stakeholders concerning the resource mobilization activities under the Tehran Convention; – Assist to the implementation of the joint UNDP-UNEP project Addressing marine litter and marine plastic – a systematic approach in the Caspian Sea”; – Assist with background research on and analyses of emerging political and environmental trends and developments in the Caspian Sea Region; – Assist with the maintenance of the Tehran Convention website and creation of textual, graphic and other materials for the website; – Assist to the organization of online meetings of the representatives of the Contracting Parties to the Convention and drafting the supporting documentation for such meetings.

Requirements:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. For this internship, preference will be given to applicants studying: Environmental Studies, International (Environmental) Law, International Relations, Economics. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to create graphic, draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable.

Languages

English and French are working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required, Russian is desirable.
