Responsibilities: 

The UNESCO Routes of Enslaved Peoples programme is developing a two-year project with the support of the European Commission to raise-awareness, reinforce mutual understanding, fight racial discrimination, and foster cohesion in communities within the European Union through better comprehension of the history and legacies of enslavement and the slave trade. This project is aligned with the Routes of Enslaved Peoples strategy and the EU Anti-racism Action Plan 2020-2025.

Under the leadership of the Chief of the Inclusion Rights and Intercultural Dialogue, and the direct supervision of the Section’s Deputy Chief, the contractor shall fulfill the following tasks:

  • Ensure the coordination of the joint UNESCO-European Commission initiative, consisting of the implementation of the following four activities:
    • Production of children books on the history and legacies of enslavement, based on workshops led with European students to identify with them the themes to be addressed;
    • Organization and publication of a cross-referenced interview analysing the traumatic legacies of enslavement and the Holocaust;
    • Organization of two workshops aiming to heal from the psychological trauma inherited from the history and legacies of enslavement and the slave trade in France (Guadeloupe) and Spain;
    • Production of a study in collaboration with young Europeans from impacted communities, to identify and compile good practices in the fight against racism and discrimination experienced by people of African descent.
  • Handling any administrative task pertaining to the initiative, including but not limited to: contract processing; financial operations guidance; project reporting and evaluation.

Requirements: 

Education

  • At least a Masters degree in the field of Social and Human Sciences, specifically on African studies or Ethnicity and Racism Studies;

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 2-year experience in administrative and project management, especially relating to the fight against racism and discrimination;

Skills and Competences

  • Good knowledge of UNESCO Administrative functioning;
  • Good knowledge of international organisations and academic institutions working in the field of African studies.
  • Ability to work independently under general guidance, and to exercise initiative and judgement.
  • Excellent analytical skills. Ability to collect, synthesize and analyze information from various sources.

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge (spoken and written) of English and French

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Languages

  • Good knowledge of another official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian).
