Responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, the Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Conducts research and collects and analyses information pertaining to human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), including their gender dimensions from a variety of sources. • Conducts interviews with victims/witnesses of violations; undertakes field monitoring and verification work; reviews and analyses information collected and follows up on different cases and situations. • Ensures that information collected is properly documented, in accordance with standard OHCHR methodology. • Contributes to the drafting of reports for the Human Rights Council including assisting in the drawing of analytical conclusions and preparing the visualization of the findings and conclusions. • Prepares briefings, summaries of information gathered and analytical documents as required. • Regularly engages with the people from the DPRK, victim’s groups, Civil Society Organizations, UN Organizations, diplomatic community and other stakeholders’ engagement for information gathering, follow-up and consultations as necessary. • Ensures gender perspectives are integrated throughout the research, information gathering and during analysis and report drafting, including on the gendered impact of the violations. • Performs other duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in law, political science, international relations or another discipline related to human rights is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible work experience in human rights, international humanitarian law or international criminal law at the national and international level is required. A minimum of two years of experience in analysis and drafting of public human rights reports is required. Experience of the relevant human rights and political context in the field is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
