Description

The FHI360-led USAID Ghana Accelerating Social and Behavior Change Activity. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Technical Specialist: Preventing and Responding to Child, Early and Forced Marriage and Unions.

Position Description:

The Technical Specialist: Preventing and responding to Child, Early and Forced Marriage and Unions will be a member of the project team and work with Ghana Health Service/Health Promotion Division, relevant government ministries, local non-governmental organizations, community organizations, USAID and others, etc. to combat, respond to and address the social, cultural, religious and other factors that influence/all for the acceptance of early and forced marriage of children in selected regions and districts of Ghana.

The Technical Specialist: Preventing and responding to Child, Early and Forced Marriage and Unions will work under the oversight of the Deputy Chief of Party to provide specialized technical assistance, leadership and direction to collaborating organizations, communities local civil society, and partner organizations to review, plan, and manage implementation, and monitor targeted behavioral, social, cultural and gender norms and behaviors that facilitate early and forced child marriage at the community level.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership, guidance and technical direction in the development and implementation of strategies, approaches activities, programs and social and behavior change interventions aimed at combating the social, cultural, and behavioral attitudes and norms that promote, encourage and/or tolerate the practice of early and forced child marriage among various religious, cultural and social groups in Ghana. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and facilitate measurable social, and behavior change programs in all phases from formative research, through design, media and materials production, community mobilization and evaluation in a compressed and rigorous timeline.
  • Responds to the specified deliverables and goals of contracts and grant agreements, ensuring achievements in a timely manner and in full support and compliance with FHI360 contractual agreement.
  • Completes detailed strategy write-ups, work plans, and delivers quarterly reports and all other reporting requirements.
  • Liaises and manages partner organizations involved in community mobilization activities and support the capacity of local organizations and other regional and district level elements through the development and implementation of a program of work that seeks to address and end early and forced child marriage.

Minimum Requirements:

6-10 years of experience in implementing and managing advocacy and behavior change programs aimed at bringing about measurable change in social, cultural, religious and behavioral norms in developing countries

Specific Knowledge Requirements:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of and proven experience in community engagement and mobilization models and strategies and their practical application to preventing and ending harmful social/cultural/religious/behavioral norms and practices with technical knowledge in child rights, gender, child protection and related subject matter.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based, innovative and practical solutions using advocacy, behavior change, community mobilization, other communication tools and rights-based approaches to address harmful social, cultural/religious/behavioral norms and beliefs in Ghana with particular experience working with district and community structures in northern regions of Ghana preferred.
  • Field experience in developing and implementing advocacy, community mobilization child welfare, child protection, child rights, social protection, social justice projects and programs in Ghana (specifically northern regions) and/or other regions that have demonstrated impact, at scale.
  • Understanding of widely accepted formative research, pretesting, and monitoring and evaluation methodologies for effective SBC and community mobilization interventions using a rights-based child-centric approach.
  • Demonstrated strong technical, programming, leadership and management skills.
  • Proven ability to work as an effective and successful team member with community-based organizations, civic groups, government ministries, community/district management structures and diverse communities. Able to be a self-starter and take the initiative to see to project activities are implemented according to plan and schedule.
  • Must be able to complete task and assignments on time and with high quality. Demonstrated ability to achieve deadlines required.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills in English and one or more additional Ghanaian local languages required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and negotiation skills and experience working in collaboration with communities, civic groups, churches/mosques, community groups, partners, donors and NGOs.
  • Ability to set priorities while multi-tasking and meet deadlines.
