Job Description

54 reasons is leading a Youth Justice Pilot with the aim of the Pilot to reduce the volume of children and young people (aged 10 – 17) experiencing avoidable short-term remand. For the Pilot, short-term remand is defined as instances where a child or young person is refused bail by Police and subsequently granted bail by a magistrate at their first court appearance (usually within 24 hours). A key Pilot priority is to reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal young people experiencing avoidable short-term remand.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

A place where your purpose matters. Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

It takes all types of personalities and talents to drive our organisation– yours included. We value a healthy work-life balance and ensure our people feel connected to each other and our impact. Learn from inspiring people and grow from a connection to our strong local and global networks. From our programs to our support services – this is the place to realise your purpose.

A place to make a difference:

Here you’re empowered to make a difference in children’s lives by learning, sharing and collaborating to find new ways to solve problems.

Where you come in:

In this part-time, fixed term position (4 days per week 7 hours per day for approximately 11 months), you’ll work with children, young people and families across the Mobile Youth Outreach service, as components of the Short-Term Remand Pilot Project. You will assist in the delivery of mobile programs that provide assertive outreach, in school and after school programming for children and young people and community events in the Wagga Wagga region. Reporting to the Team Leader, you’ll utilise group facilitation skills and a variety of creative digital technologies from the Mobile Youth Van to meet children and young people where they’re at.

You will make an impact by:

  • Supporting Mobile Youth Outreach in-school and after-school programming and community events
  • Providing community-based groupwork and cofacilitating activities
  • Liaising with 54 reasons staff to support referral pathways
  • Completing client transport as required
  • Building meaningful, respectful connections with children, young people and families, including those from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.

A place to feel valued:

Your deep expertise in youth work is invaluable. You are truly passionate about standing up for children and young people. Your thorough understanding of the impacts of trauma, coupled with your communication and relationship building skills, will enable you to build connections to support children and young people to lead a brighter future. You’re proactive and creative and comfortable working with children of all ages.

We recognise your contribution and provide you the support to ensure you can bring your best, knowing here you have the space and opportunity to grow.

Bringing your best every day, means you have:

  • Demonstrated experience in working with young people and families who have experienced trauma
  • Demonstrated experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families
  • Knowledge and experience working in the area of Tolland, Wagga Wagga
  • Experience in facilitating training and/or group-based service delivery
  • Cert IV or Diploma level qualifications in Youth Work or a related field
  • High level of communication and organisational skills
  • Driver’s licence and willingness to drive a van.
