Duties and Responsibilities
United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’s goals are: • to advance understanding of crime-related problems; • to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; • to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; • to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. This junior entry-level position is within UNICRI’s New York Liaison Office and in connection with programme development related research being conducted at UNICRI. Ongoing research is linked with the thematic areas of private military companies, gang violence and cybercrime. Under the supervision of the Programme Officer (New York Liaison Officer), the incumbent will perform the following tasks: • Conduct research on emerging trends and relevant literature, data, and articles to identify research and training gaps in each of three thematic areas. • Support the review of research, reports, and other written outputs. • Support drafting speeches and presentations for diverse audiences, including workshops, conferences, and stakeholder meetings, concerning each of the three thematic areas. • Assist in the preparation of meetings, training courses, seminars, and workshops, including conducting background research, drafting concept notes, and identifying relevant speakers. • Support coordination with relevant stakeholders and counterparts within the UN System and other International Organizations. • Participate in technical, logistical, and coordination meetings and contribute during field missions as the research requires. • Perform other related duties as required to support the broader project goals.
Qualifications/special skills
An advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in political science, international law, international relations, criminology, social studies, or related fields is required. While work experience is not required for fellows with a Master’s degree, previous working experience on the topics of private military companies, cybercrime, or gang violence is highly desirable. Previous relevant experience with the United Nations or similar large international organizations is also desirable.
Languages
English fluency (i.e., oral and written proficiency) is required. Fluency in French is desirable.
Additional Information
This is a home-based assignment, i.e. remote work. Applicants must have all necessary arrangements and equipment (including a computer and internet connection) to perform assignments remotely.
