About Office/Institute

UNU- Biotechnology Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (BIOLAC) is one of 14 research and training Institutes that comprise the think tanks in the UNU system.

UNU-BIOLAC promotes the use of biotechnology for the sustainable development of Latin American and Caribbean countries. UNU-BIOLAC accomplishes its goals by building capacities, creating knowledge, and achieving problem-oriented research on significant areas of concern for the region. In addition, it acts as a go-to think tank for science-based information to solve the most pressing problems where biotechnology could play a prominent role. UNU-BIOLAC materializes an academic community through a dynamic network of researchers and institutions participating as Programme members under several cooperative agreements. This network coordinates research and training projects, carries out training activities, and mentors short-stay research visits and training internships. This position Part-time might require international travel. The UNU-BIOLAC Information and Networking Assistant will be based in Caracas, Venezuela.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the BIOLAC Programme Head and the administrative & programmatic direction of the UNU Headquarters, the information and Networking Assistant will perform duties as follows:

1. Provides support to the Programme Head focusing on the achievement of the following results:

  • Fulfill duties as a receptionist for visitors and contact centre (telephone and email).
  • Serves as Focal Point for: Communications and Data Protection.
  • Creates specialized content for social media, basic education levels, and information and outreach for the general public.
  • Creates content proposals for the generation of educational material for third-level education (university level), grad and undergrad levels.

2. Database and social media maintenance:

  • Maintenance and update of the digital library and its database.
  • Preparation and update of dissemination materials (including website information updates).
  • Preparation of the UNU-BIOLAC Newsletter Monthly Insights.
  • Support of web material production.
  • Follow up on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook communities.
  • Support of media campaigns worldwide and locally.

3. Provides ICT supervision focusing on the achievement of the following results:

  • Maintains communications with ICT team central offices.
  • Communicates and coordinates with the UNU Campus Computing Centre (C3) team on ICT-related matters, including initiatives, security, procurement, and user support.
  • Aligns ICT initiatives with the UNU’s ICT strategic plan and established security policies
  • Keeps up-to-date protocols and best practices for cybersecurity, information technology and systems to protect against evolving threats, ensure operational efficiency, and support the institute’s objectives.
  • Serves as Focal Point for: ICT.

4. Produces and generates videos and audiovisual content:

  • Preparation of videos and material to participate in UNU campaigns.
  • Supports in corporate communications with internal and external allies.
  • Maintains communication with media departments from other UNU institutes.

5. Perform other duties assigned by the Programme Head.

  • To receive quality experience video testimonies from fellows for channelling of academic activities.
  • To produce a monthly BIOLAC Newsletter.
  • To produce content for all the social media platforms of UNU-BIOLAC.
  • To respond and follow timely any inquiry related to UNU-BIOLAC on email, website, and social media channels.

Qualifications

1) Education and certification

  • Professional Degree in Biology or related fields with experience in media and communications.

2) Required skills and experience

  • At least 2 years of working experience with High School qualifications.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and communications tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal relations, ability to easily work and communicate with others, especially with people with multi-cultural backgrounds.
  • Prior biotechnological experience is desired.
  • Communications knowledge and skills in social media, PR and marketing.
  • Knowledge of photo and video editing for web posting.

3) Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset.

Remuneration

The successful candidate will be employed under PSA (part-time 50%) contract. UNU offers an attractive compensation package. Benefits include days of annual leave and a health insurance scheme.

UNU is not liable for any taxes that may be levied on the remuneration you receive under this contract. Payment of any such taxes remains the sole responsibility of PSA holders.

 

Work Modality

This is a part-time on-site job.


Duration of contract

The duration of the initial contract is 6 months. This is a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract with UNU, with the possibility for renewal subject to requirements and satisfactory work performance. The combined duration of a PSA contract with UNU may not exceed six (6) years. The mandatory age of retirement for PSA holders is 65 years.

Immediate.
