The JPA program at the World Bank is a highly competitive initiative. Specific Unit Description – EECF2
EEFC2 is a unit of the Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation Global Practice, which covers countries in Eastern Europe, Western Balkans, and Turkey. The FCI Global Practice combines expertise in the financial sector with expertise in private sector development to foster private-sector led growth and help create markets in client countries. FCI’s core lines of business are: (a) Financial Stability & Integrity; (b) Financial Inclusion, Infrastructure & Access; (c) Long-Term Finance; (d)Climate & Risk Management; (e) Investment Climate (f) Markets, Competition and Technology. Duties and Responsibilities
 
The candidate will be part of the analytical team, working on the monitoring financial and private sector in the World Bank client countries.
The selected Economist, with a specialization in applied microeconomics (with background in industrial organization in general, and competition and regulation in particular) will be based in Washington, DC. S/he will be a member of the EECF2 Team, with other economists, financial sector and private sector development specialists, and will report to the Practice Manager of the EECF2.
The candidate must be a motivated and dynamic professional, with solid analytic microeconomic skills and policy-relevant experience, with expertise in applied research related to financial sector and/or firm-level dynamics, market dynamics, competition, and excellent client engagement, and team spirit skills, working as part of the EECF2 unit and in collaboration with other global and regional teams.
The key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Applied research
• Support the development and dissemination of reports with new analytical frameworks and approaches with an emphasis on financial sector and private sector development;
• Perform descriptive and econometric analysis, including the application of advanced statistical/econometric techniques to analyze firm, market and industry dynamics;
• Conduct research analysis across EECF2 thematic focus, including support in preparing datasets (firm-level or similar), cleaning and organizing the data;
• Support in the preparation of policy reports, working papers, and contributions to flagship publications;
• Work under the guidance of senior team members to transform the analytical outputs into operationally relevant WBG products.
Policy dialogue and project preparation
• Support the preparation of research findings for policymakers and clients in developing countries.
• Contribute to the preparation of lending or technical assistance engagements.
In addition, the selected candidate will have responsibilities specific to financial and private sector monitoring: (i) collecting data on the financial sector performance and other relevant data, as guided by the TTL; (ii) maintaining the banking sector dataset for the regular regional updates for Western Balkans, (iii) contribute to the analytical notes, as requested by the TTLs; and (iv) drafting presentations on the selected financial sector and private sector topic. The candidate will have an opportunity to participate in other project/ASA-related activities by collecting and analyzing data and drafted text as requested by project TTLs.

Selection Criteria

 

• Advanced Degree in Economics, Finance or related field. PhDs or finalizing PhD students preferred.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills
Demonstrated knowledge of econometrics, industrial organization, applied statistics, and management of large databases and publications in related areas
• Experience translating research findings into compelling policy advice
• Strong organizational, research, oral presentation, and written skills.
Proven ability to work in a team and intercultural environment.
High level of personal and professional integrity
Self-starter, results-oriented personality with proven problem-solving skills.
• Strong STATA skills (other packages such as R, Python) and LaTex are a plus; as well as advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
• Familiarity with economic and financial data systems, including Bloomberg, Haver, Orbis, OECD, EIU, IMF, World Bank and the IFS is a plus.
• Familiarity with WB project preparation is a plus.
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and to build effective working relationships with clients and colleagues.
