Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation – Financial Inclusion, Infrastructure and Access – Analyst
The development and implementation of inclusive, accessible, safe, and efficient financial systems is a crucial component of the World Bank Group’s work to reduce poverty and boost prosperity on a livable planet. The global community has also recognized financial inclusion as an enabler for seven of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Against this backdrop, the Financial Inclusion, Infrastructure and Access (EFNFI) group works to improve key enablers in financial systems – ranging from financial inclusion, payment systems (domestic and cross-border), credit infrastructure, to domestic insolvency and creditor/debtor frameworks – to enhance access to and usage of responsible and digital financial services for individuals, MSMEs, and other businesses. This includes prioritizing reaching underserved populations such as women and youth and supporting an inclusive financial system to enable climate adaption and resilience.
Duties and Responsibilities
You will work as a research assistant, helping the unit in their data management and analysis work. Depending on your performance and our program of work, you should expect to gradually assume more responsibilities and take ownership of projects or their parts.
Your specific tasks will include:
• Collecting data, which may involve designing, revising or translating questionnaires, or doing the same with respect to qualitative research (for example, focus group discussion guidelines), as well as retrieving relevant data points from online databases or screen scraping.
• Preparing or cleaning the data (understanding data structure and describing datasets and variables to others; identifying outliers and erroneous observations; merging datasets and converting them to different formats).
• Data analysis using both descriptive and inferential methods.
• Developing Stata or R files to automate various data management processes.
• Participating in testing and fine-tuning of Large Language Models and helping us with integrating AI into our data pipelines and workflows.
• Developing interactive data dashboards using R/Python and Shiny, PowerBI or Tableau.
• Drafting sections of reports, policy notes and other documents, and putting together presentation slides.
You will work on projects that belong to each of our thematic subgroups (financial inclusion, payments and market infrastructures, credit infrastructure). However, based on our portfolio and your interests, you may get the opportunity to specialize in one or more areas.
Selection Criteria
• You should have graduated with a bachelor’s degree that included courses in statistics, econometrics, operation research or others of similarly quantitative nature. Degrees in economics, statistics, finance, mathematics, computer science, physics or engineering are good examples. This position may also be a good fit for graduates in related disciplines, such as law, public policy or economic history, but you need to prove that your knowledge of mathematics and statistics is close to that an economics graduate.
