JOB SUMMARY:
Your responsibilities
For the design, manufacture and integration of a new detector, called the TBPS, for the upgrade of the CMS Tracker at CERN, the Detector Technologies (DT) Group is hiring a Mechanical Engineer. This detector will consist of high-precision carbon-fibre support structures with embedded cooling pipework serving hundreds of silicon detector modules, and acting also as support for neighbouring detectors.
The main task of the selected candidate is to ensure timely preparation of 3D models and drawings for the production of mechanical parts and assemblies, as well as preparing detailed 3D models for integration of electrical cables and optical fibres. Furthermore, the person will be closely involved in part procurement and quality control tasks, as well as in detector assembly and testing work. The work will take place in the design office and in the detector assembly labs located in the CERN Meyrin site.
Depending on the contract start date the person may also be involved in the migration of the project’s CATIA CAD data from SmarTeam data management system to CERN’s new Product Life-cycle Management tool (PLM).
The selected person will be supervised and guided by two senior engineers, and will work in close collaboration with the designers and production technicians of the project. Furthermore, the person will be frequently in contact with other CERN teams (for example on cooling pipe and cable production) as well as with external institutes that contribute to the CMS Tracker project.

What we offer
About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Diversity has been an integral part of CERN’s mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
