Overview

Do you have an interest in Occupational Health and Safety? Join our Security & Safety section (SES), focused on ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines and ensure safe working environment to prevent any injuries and accidents on the ITER sites.

As an Occupational Health and Safety Officer, your goals include:

Providing support to the Security & Safety Section Leader to ensure the safety and health of all staff by implementing and maintaining effective health and safety programs;

Conducting risk assessments, enforcing safety regulations, and promoting a culture of safety within the organization on the ITER sites (including off-site).

Success in this role includes:

  • Analyzing first of kind scientific and industrial processes from an OHS perspective, identifying necessary mitigation measures and supporting their implementation.
  • Providing high quality occupational risk assessment and analysis support for IO staff and Contractors (as per the French Labour Code and laying down the specific health and safety requirements applicable to work carried out in an establishment by an external company) in due time;
  • Supporting, advising and training ITER staff, Interim, Interns on OHS topics within defined schedule;
  • Developing and maintaining accurate and complete databases related to OHS.

Key Duties, Scope, and Level of Accountability

  • Primary Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the management of particular hazards (notably Laser, Explosive Atmosphere, Anoxia)
  • Implements the medium-term plan of OHS management within defined timelines;
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify potential safety risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Develops and carry out the OHS actions to implement the safety management system of ITER (training, risk assessment, specific study, etc.) for ITER staff;
  • Develops, implements and reviews OHS procedures, instructions, plans, and databases, anticipating potential risk exposure;
  • Reports, enforces, and monitors the implementation and respect of OHS rules and regulations with an appropriate understanding of the ITER project’s specificity.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
  • Supports creation, development, monitoring and implementation of the safety culture, measures and plans foreseen in the ITER Agreement (article 14) between the ITER Organization and the French Government;
  • Performs regular safety inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and work practices to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Leads incident and accident investigations (prepare and present reports on accidents and violations and determine causes);
  • Stays current with OHS French regulations and ensures all ITER Organization activities comply with it;
  • Oversees workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employees’ safety, including conducting risk assessment, enforcing preventative measures, inspections, and management of non-conformities (e.g. noise levels, use of machinery etc., not using protective equipment);
  • This position is shift and/or on-call based, and crucial to maintaining continuous operations and ensuring the highest level of service for our stakeholders. This requires shift rotation [and/or availability] including day, evening, and night shifts, as well as weekends and holidays, depending upon project or team needs;

Experience & Profile

  • Demonstrated experience and technical competencies in:
    • P2: Minimum 5 years’ experience in the development, management and regulation of OHS activities at both an individual and organizational level;
    • Essential competencies and experience required for success in the role:
      • OHS program management for industries or large construction project;
      • OHS regulations: understanding, interpreting, and implementing regulations and standards related to occupational medicine, health and safety, ensuring compliance to safeguard individuals in a work setting.
      • Safety risk assessment and management: systematically identifying, evaluating, and mitigating potential hazards and risks within a workplace or operational environment to ensure safe and secure work conditions, including methodologies to identify and analyze risk, and develop and implement preventive measures regarding all work-related exposures, injuries, and illnesses in the specific environment of a nuclear facility, in line with the rules and regulations in place.
    • Advantageous competencies and experience:
      • Writing and presentation: write and review technical documents in the domain of expertise, document and transmit knowledge with data, clarity, and precision;
      • Quality Management: knowledge of product and/or management requirements for international quality standards, methods, and practices;
      • Problem solving, assess problems, identify root causes, and reach practical solutions in a consistent way to reach project objectives;
      • Knowledge of the French OHS regulations.
  • Education:
    • Essential: OHS Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • Language requirements:
    • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
    • Capable of adapting to other languages in the field (to communicate with contractors)

  • Knowledge of these competencies may be acquired through on-board training at basic understanding level for all ITER staff members;
  • Implements the technical control of the Protection Important Activities, as well as their propagation to the entire supply chain;
  • May be requested to perform other duties in support of the project as defined by your line manager, and when relevant upon the request of the matrix manager;
  • May be requested to work outside the ITER Organization reference working hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays, due to business needs – this may include on-call, shift work, etc.
