JOB SUMMARY

The Energy Research Analyst will be tasked to conduct research and lead the development of specific activities in collaboration with other functions within the Energy & Sustainable Business Team. The research scope will vary depending on the project aims; however, it will revolve around mainstreaming clean heat technologies, advancing corporate decarbonization, just transition, climate finance, and sustainable industrial estate and urban development, to support sound economic analysis & data-informed policy-making. The analyst must stay abreast with the climate & energy policies, technological development, and emission abatement governance, such as standards and disclosure framework. Moreover, quantitative analytics, critical thinking, stakeholder collaboration and data acquisition, are expected and highly rewarded skills for this position. In strategizing the research target, data acquisition, and analysis, the analyst will work with other analysts and senior analysts within WRI Indonesia’s Energy & Sustainable Business (ESB) Team. Occasionally, the analyst will collaborate with WRI’s International Offices, mainly SEA, India, and China, to strengthen our regional research footprints.

This position will report directly to the Senior Manager in the ESB Team and co-lead with other analysts to develop research pipelines & and projects with heavy research content. Lastly, The Energy Research Analyst must firmly commit to implementing WRI’s mission and values – integrity, innovation, urgency, independence, and respect.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively contribute to conducting studies, analyses, and application of techno-economic policy recommendations in areas including, but not limited to, corporate renewable energy, thermal energy, just transition and renewable energy for industrial estates/zones.
  • Manage technical assistance to corporates and relevant ministries in close coordination with the ESB engagement team.
  • Produce research products and contribute to the development of WRI ESB’s Flagship Knowledge Product by collaborating with relevant research team
  • Provide mentorship and direction to research assistant with project & personal growth orientation.
  • Maintain day-to-day communication with key delivery partners (e.g. NGO, donors) on technical level.
  • Support knowledge management across energy projects, including document safekeeping and contact database management.
  • Liaison with other WRI International Offices and development partners to achieve common goals and strengthen networks.
  • Contribute to WRI’s strategic discussions relevant to advancing WRI’s research excellence and portfolio expansion of WRI Energy and Sustainable Business Programs.
  • Contribute to proposal writing and reporting to donors.

REQUIREMENTS

Required qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in energy and environmental economics, natural resource management, engineering, finance, or related field.
  • Minimum three years of relevant full-time work experience in industries with energy-related job desks, energy consulting firms, or think tanks.
  • Background and expertise on one or more of the following topics would be considered an asset:
  1. Climate and energy intersection with development economics, including trade, investment, and industrial policy.
  2. Renewable energy integration and utilization in the power and heat sector.
  3. Climate finance and project development.
  • Experience in stakeholder management and project management in the climate & energy field.
  • Ability to support discrete elements of research projects with limited manager guidance, e.g. systematically reviewing, analyzing and synthesizing existing literature; collecting, cleaning, organizing, and visualizing data.
  • Knowledge on documenting the data collection, cleaning and analysis process to make it transparent, reproducible, and accessible to team members and reviewers.
  • Ability to communicate research approach and findings effectively to technical audiences with limited support from manager, using compelling presentation skills.
  • Experience in quantitative analysis, extracting reputable research output, and contextualizing the findings from the research into policy.
  • Articulate, versatile, skilled writer with professional writing experience.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced office environment and cross-sectoral themes independently and as part of a global team across time zones.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to encourage collaboration with other programs, international offices, and partners;
  • Adaptable to rapidly changing priorities, managing multiple deadlines, and delivering high-quality work products.
  • Highly motivated, can-do attitude, proactive work style, organizational skills, and work ethic.
  • Fluent in English and Bahasa Indonesia
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Legally able to work in Indonesia

Preferred qualification:

  • Master’s degree in energy system, energy economics, public policy, environmental management, and advanced engineering.
  • Experience working in the development sector and collaborating with government institutions.
  • Author and co-author research publications and opinion pieces.
  • Knowledge of the fossil fuel industry, hard to abate and fossil-dependent sectors.
