One of the most important topics related to migration in recent years in the region has been the support of Venezuelan refugees and migrants. Due to the economic, political and social crisis in Venezuela, more than 7 million citizens have been forced to leave their country looking for better living conditions and security.
In recent years, Ecuador has gone from being a transit country to a country of permanence for people coming from Venezuela. As of the beginning of February 2023, there are a total of 476,974 Venezuelan migrants and refugees are living in Ecuador, making it one of the main destination countries for this population.
In addition, Ecuadoreans are currently the second nationality taking the hazardous routes, such as the crossing of the Darien Province. That being said, at the moment Ecuador is not only a host country for Venezuelan migrants but also an origin country for people on the move in the region.
