JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) forms part of the United Nations Secretariat and, like the other regional commissions, operates under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA comprises 21 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonisation of sectoral policies for member countries, a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialised agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and its subsidiary bodies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. This position is located within the External Relations and Communication Unit (ERC) at the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The ERC is responsible for overseeing both communication and technical cooperation initiatives conducted by the commission. The Incumbent reports directly to the head of ERC unit and will support him/her in outreach activities of the Regular Programme on Technical Cooperation (RPTC).
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority the Public Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Produces and delivers information communications products and services; assist the technical cooperation team in their outreach efforts by creating visual materials and videos to effectively communicate and showcase the activities undertaken. • Provides photo and video coverage of conferences and events relating to technical cooperation activities; conducts and manages live or recorded interviews, podcasts or short video messages with senior officials or experts; ensures using proper lighting and sound systems. • Provides specialized assistance to officers in the production and delivery of information communications products and services. • Serves as photographer by producing digital imaging, producing photo prints, write captions and metadata for photos, supports efforts to archive raw materials and end productsCoordinates media coverage of important technical cooperation events; liaises with news and publications agencies, public relations firms, UN photographers, etc. to provide advance notice of, and information on, upcoming meetings, briefings and special events and to ascertain coverage requirements; coordinates technical arrangements and organizes and allocates space for visiting news, photo, TV and film personnel; evaluates and processes applications for UN security clearances/accreditations. • Participates in the planning and coordination of major events; liaises with relevant departments/agencies; identifies logistic requirements; liaises with outsourced videographers outside the duty station and correspondence related to the planning and production of events. • Using relevant computer software, creates designs in appropriate format for promotional and other material, e.g. brochures, presentational materials, announcements, video and audio cassette covers and catalogues, etc.; ensures that photos, graphics, etc. are appropriate and conform to UN standards for print materials. • produce and edits video/film projects, radio programmes or website projects; tracks all production material; selects and catalogues sound and visual materials for inclusion in productions, and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights; coordinates scheduling of commercial and internal production facilities; directs studio recordings and/or evaluates audio quality of recordings for inclusion in programmes. • Monitors the performance of digital audio workstations and other computer-based editing systems with respect to proper digital file management; review entries, file storage, retention and deletion practices to ensure consistent application of basic guidelines; identifies problems/issues and liaises with appropriate personnel for their resolution. • Provides guidance/training to junior staff on photography. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
First Level University degree in Audio Visual Arts. Cinema Arts, videography or any related fields is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in public communication/ video production international broadcasting or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. A minimum of one year of experience in international setting is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. In addition, Arabic is a working language at ESCWA. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include one or more assessments which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
