JOB DESCRIPTION

The UN Ethiopia is undergoing the development of its next phase cooperation framework which will begin in July 2025 and run until June 2030. At the heart of this framework is the Leave No One Behind (LNOB) Agenda which prioritizes the most vulnerable groups in the country and persons most likely to be left behind, including women and girls; children, youth and adolescents; persons with disabilities and people living with HIV/AIDS. Critical to this is an LNOB assessment that is underway and will highlight key drivers of exclusion for these groups while also identifying specific vulnerabilities that exist for them with recommendations on how the UN can address them. For persons with disabilities, the UN has established an interagency Leave No One Behind Disability Inclusion working group that brings several agencies together to formulate a comprehensive, joint strategy on programmes, initiatives and policy advocacy to protect and advance the rights of persons with disabilities. Under the guidance of the UNRCO Partnerships Officer and the Disability Inclusion Group co-chairs, the Disability and Inclusion Officer would support the coordination of the Disability Inclusion group to ensure their ability to implement key goals and targets for persons with disabilities as laid out by the next phase cooperation framework and LNOB Assessment through an annual work plan. The Disability and Inclusion Officer would also support and contribute to the joint Disability Inclusion Consultative Platform which includes UN, government and organizations for persons with disabilities (OPDs).

Under the direct supervision of the Development Coordination Officer, the National UN Volunteer will:

• Contribute to design and implementation of the annual Disability Inclusion workplan for the Leave No One Behind working group, ensuring regular
updates on progress and met/unmet targets
• Support the development of monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the impact of disability inclusive initiatives
• Support the development and management of an interagency Disability Database to track disability information, including the number of programs that
cater to the specific needs of persons with disabilities
• Support the Disability Inclusion Consultative Platform and contribute to accessible and representative advocacy approaches in promoting the rights and
inclusion of persons with disabilities
• In collaboration with the UN Communications Group, participate in the development of inclusive strategies for media and information literacy initiatives
• Ensure that training materials and methods are accessible and inclusive
• Collect regular reports on the progress of disability inclusive programmes from the LNOB Disability Inclusion working group and suggest areas for
improvement based on lessons learned and best practices
• Support building and maintaining intersectional alliances for gender equality and disability inclusion, children and youth with disabilities; and persons
with disabilities living in vulnerable or precarious environments (such as conflict or displacement), as well as engaging with various partners and other
relevant entities on issues for which persons with disabilities are most at risk, such as sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) and the contraction of
HIV/AIDs
• Actively support in mapping and identifying potential new partnerships with relevant OPDs and community stakeholders to enhance the reach and
effectiveness of inclusion initiatives

Social Science or Humanities at the national and/or international level
• Experience in partnership with NGOs, civil society organizations, or other international development organizations is an asset;
• Overall good understanding of the national situation and politics related to persons with disabilities and marginalized communities; knowledge of
disability rights and inclusion principles;
• Computer literacy, including working knowledge in various MS Office applications, email/internet and proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required;
• Good oral and written skills; good drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
• Strong commitment to inclusion and social justice.

Other (Desired or Mandatory) required technical knowledge
• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots
community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for
development;
• Familiarity with data management principles and techniques.
• Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and
national personnel;
• Sound security awareness;
• Have affinity with or interest in disability inclusion, the rights of persons with disabilities civil society engagement, volunteerism as a mechanism for
durable development, and the UN System.
• Knowledge of local languages such as Oromifa, Afar, Tigrinya, Somali, is desirable.

Addis Ababa is the capital of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The population is estimated at about 4 million or so. The climate is sunny and temperate, but it can be very cold at night, with freezing temperature at times. It is therefore advisable to bring warm clothing and foresee using heaters and/or log fires when necessary. Addis Ababa is the headquarters for the UN Economic Commission for Africa as well as the African Union (ex-OAU). Thus, there is a very large community of expatriates from all over the world. There are some 80 embassies/diplomatic missions. Housing is most of the time readily available and the rents are, on average, reasonable. Most foodstuffs, beverages, household goods, furniture and clothing, mostly imported from the Middle/Far East, South Africa and Europe, or local brands, can be found, although they can be expensive. Meat, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables are cheap and abundantly available. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing, other living essentials and will already be fully conversant with the living conditions in Ethiopia.
