UNAIDS is leading the global effort to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. Since the first cases of HIV were reported more than 35 years ago, 78 million people have become infected with HIV and 35 million have died from AIDS-related illnesses. Since it started operations in 1996, UNAIDS has led and inspired global, regional, national and local leadership, innovation and partnership to ultimately consign HIV to history. UNAIDS is a problem-solver. It places people living with HIV and people affected by the virus at the decision-making table and at the centre of designing, delivering and monitoring the AIDS response. It charts paths for countries and communities to get on the Fast-Track to ending AIDS and is a bold advocate for addressing the legal and policy barriers to the AIDS response. UNAIDS provides the strategic direction, advocacy, coordination and technical support needed to catalyse and connect leadership from governments, the private sector and communities to deliver life-saving HIV services
The UNAIDS Strategy aims to advance global progress in achieving country set targets for universal access to HIV prevention. It provides a roadmap for the Joint Programme, with concrete goals marking milestones on the path to achieving UNAIDS’ vision of “Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths.
Currently our world is home to 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 to 24, the largest generation of young people in its history. Close to 90 per cent of this youth population live in developing countries. What is more, their numbers are expected to continue to grow, especially in the least developed regions. With such numbers, it is clear that sustainable development and peace cannot be achieved unless we involve young people and create the conditions that allow them to reach and unleash their full potential
The UNAIDS Youth Programme launched in 2012 works with youth as beneficiaries, partners and leaders of the HIV response. It advocates for evidence-informed policy through increased strategic information and fosters a decentralized, organic youth-led movement in the AIDS response. Youth2030, the first-ever UN system-wide strategy on youth, guides joint UN action for and with young people globally. The Youth Programme strengthens young people’s leadership skills and their ability to operate in a framework that advances evidence-informed HIV responses.
The core objectives of the programme are to:
• Mainstream young key population issues in the country’s HIV agenda;
• Strengthen young key populations’ leadership and meaningful engagement in the HIV response;
• Support youth-led accountability and advocacy to influence decision-making on aspects that affect their lives and to address the structural barriers that drive the epidemic among young people;
• Provide technical assistance to donor funded work on Young Key Populations in the country;
• Support youth-led monitoring and research processes to generate strategic information for advocacy and decision making;
• Provide policy guidance for the strengthening and scale up of youth-led service delivery;
• Advocate for the removal of structural barriers that affect young people’s access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.
The UNAIDS Country Office in India provides leadership and coordinates the expanded UN system response in India towards ending AIDS. The UCO India scales up HIV services focused on key and vulnerable populations and locations most at risk.
