Here you’re empowered to make a difference in children’s lives by learning, sharing and collaborating to find new ways to solve problems. In this full time*, fixed term role (parental leave backfill through to September 2025, with potential for extension), you’ll be working within the Office of the CEO and leading our small but mighty Media Team to help fulfil our promises to children in Australia, the Pacific and around the world. Whether it’s through driving our strategic media engagement or providing timely and sophisticated advice internally, as Head of Media you will play a critical role in ensuring that Save the Children remains a sought out and trusted voice on child rights able to create lasting change for children everywhere.

 

The role is ideally based in Melbourne, though other locations would be considered.

 

You will make a difference by:

  • Providing strategic media guidance, including the development of proactive media strategies, advice on emerging media issues, media management during emergencies, and preparation of spokespeople when required
  • Leading and developing our high-performing media team and working closely with our government relations, marketing, and fundraising teams to deliver unified strategic communications
  • Creating and editing media content, developing and maintaining relationships with key media contacts, and overseeing regular media monitoring and reporting
  • Proactively working to amplify the voices of children and young people in our external communications, whilst at all times ensuring that child safety and safeguarding is prioritised
  • Undertaking all work in a way that adheres to organisational policies, manages risks and promotes workplace health and safety

  • Substantial related experience, including people leadership, operational and budget management, strategy development, as well as writing and pitching media content
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to network, build relationships with, and manage multiple internal and external stakeholders in order to achieve results
  • Experience working safely with vulnerable populations, especially children, to tell empowering and authentic stories
  • High levels of initiative, accountability and discretion, with the ability to manage and adapt in high-stress and fast-moving situations
