Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Water Unit of the Transboundary Cooperation Section, Environment Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe based in Geneva, Switzerland. UNECE’s Environment Division contributes to the overall objectives and mandate of UNECE as a multilateral platform facilitating greater economic integration and cooperation among its member States, and to the broad aim of the Environment subprogramme to safeguard the environment and human health, and to promote sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Associate Environmental Affairs Officer, the intern is expected to contribute to the Environment Division through the work of the secretariat of the Convention on the Use and Protection on Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) and its Protocol on Water and Health (Protocol) as follows: a) Support the preparation and organization of meetings of the bodies under the Convention and the Protocol, as well as workshops, such as: i.

Tenth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention (23 – 25 October 2024, Ljubljana, Slovenia), including back-to-back events; ii.

National and regional workshops on the implementation of the Water Convention; iii. Meeting of the Bureau to the Protocol on Water and Health. b) Support the implementation of country projects and activities under the Water Convention and the Protocol on Water and Health, depending on needs, including possible support to: i. the globalization of the Water Convention; ii.

the work on SDG indicator 6.5.2 as required; iii. the activities of the Transboundary Water Cooperation Coalition; ii.

other activities as required. c) Assist with the preparation of communication materials, including videos, visuals, articles and publications on the Water Convention and its Protocol on Water and Health. d) Provide general assistance to the secretariat with day-to-day tasks, as required (e.g. drafting of documents, updating the website, desk research on identified issues, correspondence with country experts and partners, project reporting, etc.).

Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); Be computer literate in standard software applications; For this internship, studies in environment, water management, development, international law, international relations or equivalent are required.

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns work five days per week. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship.
