Duties and Responsibilities

The implementation of the SMEP Programme is guided by its Steering Committee and UNCTAD’s MoU with the programme donor, UK-FCDO.

The Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development (TED) Branch of the Division on International Trade and Commodities of UNCTAD assists developing countries in strengthening their capacity to design and implement mutually supportive trade, environment, climate change and sustainable development objectives in development strategies at all levels.

Additionally, through its Oceans Economy and Fisheries Programme, UNCTAD is also engaged in the identification of opportunities for sustainable use of marine resources and ecosystems and on the implementation of trade-related targets of SDG 14 (targets 1, 4, 6 7 and b).

Under the supervision of the project officers of the UNCTAD SMEP and Oceans Programmes, the consultant will 1. Coordinate and share the knowledge support to SMEP contributors, involving at least 15 linkages actions to promote better synchronization across the 25-project portfolio under SMEP Programme, and linkages between SMEP and Oceans Economy activities.

Liaise with SMEP contributors in reviewing analytical outputs, with special attention to context and national aspects of relevance. 2. Coordinate and share the knowledge support to SMEP contributors, involving at least 15 linkages actions to promote better synchronization across the 25-project portfolio under SMEP Programme, and linkages between SMEP and Oceans Economy activities.

Liaise with SMEP contributors in reviewing analytical outputs, with special attention to context and national aspects of relevance. In coordination with project officer and other SMEP-engaged consultants, support the development of policy briefs, research notes and commentaries derived from commissioned research under SMEP.

3. Prepare the supporting substantive content for at least 5 visual communication materials to assist output dissemination and the delivery of technical assistance activities. Track results linked to tanneries and organic waste field projects, including filing relevant impact evidence for reporting, promoting and tracking linkages between projects interactions with their linkages with relevant policy fora, impact indicators, and provide inputs to the drafting of quarterly and annual reports related to the SMEP Programme portfolios on organic residues and tanneries.

Organize and support 5 events on export-linked pollution in Africa, South Asia, and Indo-Pacific regions, assist with substantive and logistics support in the organization of webinars, web news items, and physical events to disseminate UNCTAD and/or SMEP research outputs of relevance to international trade practitioners, regional and national authorities and the 5th Oceans Forum on trade-related aspects on SDG 14 on the topic Oceans economy, trade policy, the climate and development nexus Assist with substantive and logistics support in the organization of the 5th UN Oceans Forum including preparation of concept notes, invitations, logistical aspects, presentations, speeches, and social media content, and drafting of the draft Chairs’ summary to the UNOC 2025.

Support the organization of the 5th Oceans Forum on trade-related aspects on SDG 14 on the topic Oceans economy, trade policy, the climate and development nexus including the preparation of concept notes, invitations, logistical aspects, presentations, speeches, and social media content, and drafting of the draft Chairs’ summary to the UNOC 2025

Qualifications/special skills
First university degree, Bachelor, in Environmental Sciences, International Law, Social Sciences or related field is required At least 7 years of work experience in project management in an international context is required Experience organizing partnerships related to environmental or social aspects in developing countries is desirable Experience working on oceans-economy related environmental themes within the United Nations is desirable Experience in supporting projects on trade and sustainable development in Africa, South Asia or the Indo-Pacific region is desirable
Languages
Fluency oral and written in English is required.
