Assessing the Impact of Accepting Online Payments on Businesses

2. SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

ADB has an agreement with a major international credit card company to access their transactions data for an evaluation study on the benefits of accepting online payments for merchants. The joint research team includes staff from ADB and the international credit card company.

The research project aims to provide evidence and quantification of the benefits of how going digital (i.e., accepting online domestic and cross-border transactions) will affect firm performance (measured in terms of revenue and number of transactions).

The firms can choose to accept online transactions by turning on this function provided by the credit card company. The analysis will focus on a number of countries, which will be chosen based on data availability and will represent economies with different fundamentals, such as extent of credit card adoption, payment system maturity and internet adoption.

The intern will participate in the research, with the following key responsibilities:
• Conduct a literature review,
• Code econometrics models for the analysis
• Assist in checking data outputs
• Assist in the writing of the draft journal article

PERIOD OF ASSIGNMENT
• Duration: 11 weeks
• Timing: January 2025 onwards

LOCATION
ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines

5. EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
Intern will have the learning opportunity to participate in joint research by an international organization and an international credit card company. The outputs include programming codes and a draft journal article.

Qualifications

6. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (specify any area of academic specialization):
• An advanced PhD student in economics with specialization in applied econometrics, industrial organization and development economics.
• Intern must be enrolled at a school in one of the ADB member countries for the entire duration of the internship.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Completion of at least 1 PhD dissertation paper is required.
• High proficiency in coding software such as Python, R and STATA is required.
