Nairobi is the headquarters duty station for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) the United Nations agency mandated with ensuring better urban future by promoting socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement sustainable development goal 11 (SDG 11). Although the mandate of UN-Habitat is global, the agency has placed special emphasis on working for the benefit of the host country through contributing to Kenya’s development priorities in a variety of ways.
UN-Habitat Regional Office in Africa (ROAf) located in Nairobi, Kenya, is supporting priorities of member states and governments to achieve sustainable urban development. Implementation of Kenya programmes is carried out within the ROAf.
The Information Assistant I shall support the implementation of the Social Territories Programme, in partnership with the Instituto Pereira Passos (IPP), under the Programme Coordination.
Academic qualifications: Required: ● A first-level university degree in Public Policy, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, Biology, Economics, Urban Studies, Statistics or related fields is required, or additional 3 (three) years of relevant experience to the post, beyond the requirement.
Experience: ● Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience in the below-mentioned fields of work.
● Progressively responsible experience in research and/or project management on data analyses. ● Professional and academic experience on themes related to data analysis and information, databases, local economic and regional development is required. ● Experience with activities involved in the implementation of public policies in favelas. ● Previous experience working in the United Nations is an asset. Skills: ● Good computer skills in Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook and Web search engines are required; ● Good command of programming languages such as Python, R or SQL is required; ● Good command of geographical information systems (GIS) software such as QGIS or ArcGIS is desirable; ● Good handling of software, online platforms and other tools for data visualization is desirable; ● Specific courses on statistic software or similar are an asset.
Knowledge management → The person will propose formats and procedures that allow the efficient implementation of the activities related to the project development.
→ The person must know the file of the Office, work with it and ensure its proper maintenance, accessibility for all staff and due updating. → The person will prepare databases related to the project running. → The person will make sure that all relevant technical information will be adequately shared with the correspondent staff.
→ The person will ensure that all produced material will be fit-for-purpose and delivered, in an organized way, for posterior consultation and use of the Agency.

Languages: ● Fluency in Portuguese is required.
● Knowledge of any other working language of the United Nations is considered an added advantage.
The Information Assistant I shall support the implementation of the project with the following responsibilities: a) Participate and support the organization of capacity building activities for government teams involved in the implementation of the “Social Territories Project in Large Favelas Complexes”. b) Assist in the elaboration and calculation of variables, indicators and other urban and environmental data and information.
c) Extract, process and analyse data from public databases and statistics – such as those produced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and other organizations – and present them in various formats (tables, graphs, charts).
d) Provide appropriate technical support to implement activities related to collection, production, analysis and management of data, information and urban indicators and support any other studies and research. e) Analyse the results with territorial vision to support public policies planning.
f) Accompany the studies and research related to the large favelas complexes and the rest of the territorial scope of the project, especially the analyses process. g) Revise the results of the Multidimensional Poverty Index in the large favelas complexes and the rest of the territorial scope of the project.
h) Attend to meetings and conferences promoted by UN-Habitat, as requested. i) Document expert group meetings, forums, consultations, training events and other activities related to the planning, development and implementation of the programme, if requested.
j) Maintain an orderly and accessible information file related to the information and data produced. k) Be responsible for the delivery according to deadlines for each task. l) Support the technical teams with data analysis, evaluation and monitoring; m) Exert quality control on all data collected in the field.
n) The consultant will be responsible, within its competencies, to ensure that the technical activities are aligned with the quality expectations of the Agency and the counterparts.
o) Support the preparation of reports to partners, internal reports, etc. at various stages of the projects. p) Perform other duties which may be requested by the supervisors. q) Elaboration and delivery of a Monthly Activity Report in a timely manner. The Consultant will be responsible for completing all courses and training activities that are indicated to him/her by his/her supervisor.
The security course BSAFE is required to be accredited during the first month of employment.
The Consultant will be responsible for his/her own security, so the person should get familiarized with United Nations security mechanisms and comply with them according to the Framework of Accountability for the United Nations Security Management System.
