The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) was founded in 2002 with a transformational goal: help save the lives of millions of people living with HIV/AIDS in the developing world by dramatically scaling up antiretroviral treatment. When CHAI was founded, many viewed this goal as unreasonable because health systems in poor countries were too weak and prices of relevant drugs and diagnostic tests were too high. CHAI played a leadership role, working alongside governments and other partners, to lower the costs of treatment and help build the in-country systems necessary to provide lifesaving treatment to millions of people.

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease.

Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus.

Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing.

Overview of CHAI’s work in Type 1 Diabetes and other Non-Communicable Diseases

Across the globe, more than 9.4 million people are living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) (Breakthrough T1D, 2024).

This burden is growing – by 2040 there are expected to be almost 17.5 million people living with T1D, among which 4.2M will be children and adolescents under 25 (Breakthrough T1D, 2024). In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), poor access to T1D care means many people die before they are diagnosed and receive treatment.

For those receiving treatment, there are significant gaps in access to the highest clinical standard of care. Lifelong costs associated with managing T1D are also prohibitive and in many cases even catastrophic for people with T1D and their families.

The resulting disparities in health outcomes for people living with T1D around the world are enormous, with life expectancy at just 24 years in low-income countries and 37 years in lower-middle-income countries (Breakthrough T1D, 2024).

In contrast, in high-income countries, the life expectancy of people living with T1D is comparable to that of those without.

Hence, while care for T1D is complex and a daily challenge for people living with T1D, especially children and adolescents, the high life expectancy in high-income countries is a testament that we have the tools available to enable people living with T1D to live long and high-quality lives.

To reduce this disparity and improve the lives of people with T1D in LMICs, CHAI has programs in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya and Nigeria to strengthen early detection of T1D at the primary healthcare level and improve access to adequate care pathways.

In addition, CHAI has programs in a broader range of countries to strengthen NCD health systems, comprehensively address barriers to diagnosis and care, and strengthen collaboration across partners working on improving access to NCD diagnosis and care.

Over the next year, CHAI will lead the design of a collaborative initiative aiming at maximizing investments in T1D diagnosis and care, involving several major development organizations combining resources to enact substantial change.

For this high-profile strategy project, we are looking for an experienced, highly motivated Senior Manager with outstanding strategic, leadership, and relationship management skills.

As Senior Manager, you will be pivotal in steering this transformative project. The ideal candidate will lead a skilled, diverse team, leveraging their expertise to identify, develop, and execute on bringing together a coalition of impact-driven stakeholders that bring about meaningful change in access to T1D care and commodities.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, policy-shaper, and coalition-builder. The Senior Manager will adhere to the core CHAI values of resourcefulness, entrepreneurialism, flexibility, independence, humility, and work ethic.

This position will report to the Senior Director, NCDs.

This role is funded for one year, with the potential for renewal.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities in this role will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Be the primary lead on this strategy project, responsible for setting strategic direction, development of key deliverables, and day-to-day project and team management.
  • Lead engagement, coordination and overall relationship management with the steering committee, core partner, and other stakeholders as relevant.
  • Manage a remote team of a (Senior) Associate and Technical Advisor, offering strategic and technical guidance and support across various workstreams and supporting their professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative, pragmatic, and action-oriented team environment, ensuring that each team member understands and is empowered to succeed in their roles and responsibilities within the context of the broader strategy project.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with key partners and stakeholders, understanding nuances in perspectives and objectives, fostering continued alignment of goals across partners, ensuring an open working relationship, and adjusting pace where necessary.
  • Lead engagement with CHAI country teams, ensuring country government perspectives are adequately captured and represented in the strategy development process and that project outcomes are fed back to CHAI country teams and in-country stakeholders.
  • Inform program design and activities based on global evidence and lessons learned from CHAI and other partners.
  • Represent CHAI effectively to key partners and other country- and global-level stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain institutional capacity and facilitate opportunities for knowledge sharing.
  • Any other duties as required by the Senior Director, NCDs
  • Up to 50% international travel required in the first 6 months of this project, with reduction to approximately 20% in the second 6 months.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent plus 10 years work experience; or Advanced Degree or equivalent plus 8 years work experience; or equivalent work experience, with strong academic performance and professional experience in roles that demonstrate an ability to independently and effectively lead teams and manage complex projects in high-pressure, fast-paced environments
  • Exceptional strategic skillset, structured thinker with demonstrated experience in strategy development
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills, and ability to use data to inform program development and strategy
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to work independently and effectively in a high-performance, dynamic environment, and handle multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and an ability to manage challenging multi-cultural, multi-stakeholder situations to achieve intended results, including proven track record of building strong and effective working relationships remotely.
  • Excellent people management skills and demonstrated experience leading others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English with the ability to represent CHAI externally
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Powerpoint and Word
  • A balanced and open-minded perspective, with an ability to understand and appreciate different viewpoints and perspectives
  • Strong commitment to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Strong commitment to teamwork, team mission, and hard work

Advantages:

  • Experience in strategy consulting
  • Prior knowledge of or experience working with global health partners, especially in NCDs
  • Prior knowledge or demonstrated experience of public health systems strengthening and improving access to health care and commodities in LMICs
