JOB SUMMARY

 

ROLE PURPOSE:
The post holder will facilitate effective communication and understanding across linguistic barriers, ensuring that our mission, values, and initiatives reach diverse communities with clarity and cultural sensitivity. The translator role encompasses a range of translation modalities, including interpretation (both consecutive and simultaneous) and written translation, all of which play crucial roles in our organization’s work.
Proficiency in interpretation allows for real-time communication during meetings, conferences, and events, ensuring that participants can engage fully regardless of their language proficiency.
Expertise in written translation ensures that documents, reports, publications, and other materials are accurately translated while maintaining the integrity of the original message.

This includes translating a wide array of content, such as legal documents, program materials, promotional materials, and communication resources, among others.

Responsibilities:

Translation and Interpretation:

  • Provide accurate and culturally sensitive translation and interpretation services in various contexts, including meetings, conferences, training, interviews, presentations, and written materials.
  • Ensure clarity, fidelity to the original message, and cultural appropriateness in all translations and interpretations.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while handling sensitive information during translation and interpretation tasks.

Language Support:

  • Assist staff members and stakeholders who require language support, including facilitating communication between individuals with different language proficiencies.
  • Offer language assistance and guidance on cross-cultural communication to enhance understanding and collaboration within the organization and with external partners.
  • Assist Area Director and Head of Programmes with translation at field visits and meetings with local authorities etc.

Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct thorough reviews and quality checks of translated materials to ensure accuracy, coherence, and consistency.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and stakeholders to verify technical terminology and ensure translations meet the organization’s standards and objectives.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with program teams, communications departments, and other relevant stakeholders to understand their translation needs and priorities.
  • Develop and oversee a transparent and accessible scheduling system for translator support, ensuring clarity and openness to all relevant departments.Keep a feedback tracker of all requests for assistance needed and assist with providing feedback after collaborating with relevant operations team members.

Professional Development:

  • Stay updated on advancements in translation technologies, methodologies, and industry standards through continuous learning and professional development activities.
  • Other related duties as agreed with the line manager.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Certificate of education, higher level of education desirable
  • Minimum 2 year’s experience in translation
  • Previous experience in translation and interpretation roles, either in a professional capacity or through internships and volunteer work, is essential.Experience working with NGOs or non-profit organizations may be particularly relevant.
  • Experience with both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation in various settings, such as meetings, conferences, interviews, and community events, is highly desirable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (required) and Russian/Ukrainian
  • Experience translating documents, materials, and communications relevant to the sectors or issues addressed by the NGO (such as humanitarian aid, development, human rights, etc.) can be advantageous.
  • Computer literate (including working knowledge of Microsoft Office)
  • Familiarity with translation software and tools, as well as proficiency in using digital communication platforms and collaboration tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and discretion with confidential information
  • Ability to work independently and proactively
  • Proven ability to handle challenging workload
