JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is located in Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work, as well as the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, and persons marginalized from society and development.

The intern will work under the supervision of and report to the Senior Social Affairs Officer, Programme on Ageing Section (PAS), in the Social Inclusion and Participation Branch (SIPB). Tasks may include, but are not limited to: • Assisting with preparations for and observance of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (ECOSOC Chamber, 7 October 2024). • Assisting with research and drafting of the United Nations Inter-Agency Group on Ageing exploratory paper. • Assisting with research and drafting of the report of the Secretary-General on the modalities of the 5th review and appraisal of the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing • Assisting with preparation of materials to be posted on the website and social media platforms.

This internship is designed to be full-time. Duties may be carried out in a hybrid manner (in-person at UNHQ in New York, as well as telecommuting from within the duty station). Telecommuting from outside the duty station may be considered on an exceptional basis. A part-time schedule may also be considered on an exceptional basis depending on the individual situation of the selected candidate. The internship will begin with an initial duration of 2 months, with the opportunity of an extension for up to a total of 6 months.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. programme or equivalent or have completed a Bachelors, Master’s or Ph.D. programme. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
